gas in tghe oil

The day was great to get out and cut 4 acres of 2nd crop alfalfa. I noticed a weird oil/gas residue on the frame of my farmall 300 near/under the governor. I couldn't see where it was coming from, but it was sure there. It smelled like oil and gas.
Went to the other side and loosened the upper oil check plug...nothing came out. Loosened the lower one, and oil mixed with gas streamed out.

I figure there must be some sort of piston blow by or something else letting gas into the crank area.

Any ideas?

I'm glad this is a hobby for me. If my life/family depended on farming I can see where equipment makes all the difference.

The only time gas can get to the crankcase is during a cold start when you do a lot of choking and the engine doesn't start up. It is called fuel dillution.

Seriously? On a 300 Farmall? I always thought they were gravity fed. I learn something everyday.

Is it running OK? While running there's only about one way to gas in the oil of a 300 and that is through the pistons. If you having it running so rich that it is missing it will suck fuel into the piston then wash down the cylinder walls into the oil pan.

Ya, she runs great. Went out this morning and drained a little out. It seemed pretty normal. Still had a slight smell of gas though. Makes sense that it's running rich though.

I tried to look for a fuel pump online and there doesn't seem to be one for a 300. I should be able to adjust the carb by the book.

Thanks for the feedback y'all

Now that I think about it there was a point a few weeks ago when it was running different.

I had to have some work done on the rear hub. After driving it back (10 miles) from the shop I noticed that when I throttled down it instantly died, then started hard. For a few runs after that it did the same thing: died when I throttled down.

It hasn't done that again during this last cut, but I wonder if fuel didn't get in then. I'll change the oil and start from there

Seen gas in the oil pan many times due to a bad float in the carb which is turn fills the carb with gas and as it sits the gas evaporates goes uo and into the cylinder with an open valve and then condenses and turns back to a liquid and then seeps down and past the rings. Did a 9N not to long ago that have 5 gal of oil and gas mixed in the oil pan

CHANGE the oil and the oil filter before you run it again. If you have so much as a qt of gas in the oil that can and will cause the engine to blow. Be sure when you park it to turn off the gas at the sediment blow. Seen more then one tractor have the oil pan full of gas due to a leaking float needle which in turn fills the carb with gas which is turns works it way into the oil pan and then you can have a $2000 problem
