Painting a frame

Working on building a flatbed on a '96 F350 truck of mine. While the bed is off, I want to clean and paint the frame, or the back half anyhow. It has a lot of surface rust, not near rusted through though.

Question....what is a good brand, and number/type of cleaner, primer, paint, ETC. to use on this?

This is a good truck, and I want it to be around for a while yet.....and I want to do this right the first time.....Thanks ahead of time.

I would sand blast the rust off. you have to get it prepared first. then might want to look into the rockguard type of paint.

I'm with Steve in VA--POR-15 is the usual choice of professional restorers--not cheap, but it's good stuff, and the cost of doing it right the first time is minor compared with having to re-do it or fix it if it's went too far. Did a '94 F-250 frame a while ago that still looked good when I sold it several years later in spite of being parked outside. They have a 3-step process--a cleaner, then a prep/converter, then the paint. I've always bought mine direct though they also have dealers.

i like to apply OSPHO after wire brushing or blasting...it kills the rust period...then brush the coating it leaves just enuff to scrath it and apply a good coat of Rustoleum.

I, like ben there said Ospho is good to use under the paint. I have used it for years and if applied correctly and painted will last a long time before rust will come back.
I used to buy it from the factory in Cleveland, Ohio, then on the last order they gave me the part number at Ace Hardware and I saved on the shipping cost. I don't have the part number now, so I will have to call the factory and git it.

I use the POR prep or equivalent on anything that had rust on it even if it looks like it is all cleaned off.
