the smell of passing things down

I posted a while ago about batteling cancer for my 3rd time,its been going really better than I expected,but life sucks,the mrs of 21 yrs deciced the grass is greener somewere else,i miss her terribly but oh well.my recent high in life has been my 20 yr old son,who is staying by his dad,and hes made it very clear,im proud of him.he has a great job,welding,and has stepped up tremendously around the place.i haven"t had to ask him to do anything,nothing at all.hes seen my pain over the years and has carried me to the truck to go for a ride.im so proud of him,hes bought his 1st truck on his own,a dodge diesel,which he will park by my window so I can hear the injectors rattle.lol.lol.well I decided today was the day to give him something that was given to me as a youngster,some tools for his 1st truck,not just any tools,my grandfathers tools he carried in his car.my pap was born in 1898 and never ever thru anything away,esp tools.when I got my first car,he went to hius Pontiac opened the trunk and give me his craftsman toolbox,he said id need it worse than him,and by god he was right.lol.ive been saving this box for my son someday,and that day was today.i asked that he see I get out to my garage this evening after supper,i had something for him.we got out there and I got this toolbox,he asked where I got that from cause he never seen it before,i told him to get a chair,i have a story.i told him this story,we blew the dust off it,and as I went open it I noticed tears in his eyes.when I opened it ,the smell of my grandfather was in that box,all these years,when I took the tray out and opened a socket set,the smell of my grandfather was so strong,i knew he was there smiling and looking down at us,crying like fools.we wiped them off and each one had a story,or most of them did anyway,i really needed that smell this evening.i believe 100 percent now that every time my son picks up a tool of mine or my fathers now he understands the value of the smell of handed down tools..thanks for reading my story.off to bed

My son has tools that his grandfather (my wife's father) gave him, and they are one of his most prized possessions. My mother also gave him the truck that my dad had bought new, a 1990 Dodge 1/2 ton extended cab long box. He drove it longer than he should have after it cost him quite a bit of money because it was his grandpa"s truck. When he hears the song "I drive your truck" he breaks down and cries. He is going to school to be an airplane mechanic after working for a local BTO who wants him to stay working for him.

My father passed away when I was 16. I have
his craftsman tool box, I don't use his tool
box because it isn't big enough for me now,but
many if not all of his tools are in my big box
& I use them dailey. These tools are a
treasured possesion of mine today. Now it's 40
years later, everytime I use a tool of his I
think of him, this way he lives on threw me.
I miss him everyday....

using those tools from now on has changed his life forever,i really believe after yesterday evening they are no longer,just tools,but as you say treasured possessions.

i got my father's and grandfather's tools when my dad died 11 years ago...got a good chuckle going thru my dad's tool box...found a bunch of tools i'd been missing for years lol...i guess he got even with me for losing and borrowing his tools when i was a kid.

Something my brother and I did after Dad died that I'm really proud of is we told our sons, 5 of them, "we have all the tools we'll ever need, Your grandpa had lots, draw straws, take turns and take them all." Really gives me a boost to see some of
dad's stuff at one of the boys house. I know he's remembered!
