John Deere 3020 fuel problem

Got a JD 3020 that starts running rough a couple minutes after startup. Really loading up and chugging black smoke. Cleaned air cleaner and changed fuel filter. Checked plugs - wet and black. Carburetor is wet underneath. Made sure choke was off. Will start after setting for awhile but repeats process on startup. Am I looking at a rebuilt carburetor?. Fuel is fresh .
Thanks,
Maddog

I'd look at needle and seat first, before doing a complete rebuild- acts like its sticking and flooding it out. And blow it out with compressed air while you've got it apart.

Did you put the manifold blocks in the "summer" position?
Float may not be "floating" and shutting off the fuel when the bowl is at the correct level.

Depending on the carburetor, some have a diaphragm that works with vacuum to prevent stumble when the throttle opens suddenly. Mine had a rupture in the diaphragm that let gas dump into the manifold during deceleration. Yours could be just letting gas be sucked in full bore!

Bet there will be some &*^*% responses to this one!

Mike(WA),
Thanks for your response. I forgot to say that I turned then rear needle in and out while it was running and it made no difference. Would that fit with the problem you described? The bottom of carb was wet with fuel.
First time on this forum. Great to be able to tap into all the experience out there!
