pto overrun coupler stuck, can't remove

I have an old Massey Ferguson that has an old pto overrun coupler that I can't get off. Something is stripped inside because I can now stop the pto with my hand. It won't engage enough to turn the implement. When I turn the coupler, either direction, it spins on the shaft but I can't see or feel anything to drive thru, ie. a pin. I see one place that is split like it is divided, drove a screwdriver into the split, didn't help. Any suggestions?

that thing that is split is a roll pin u need to drive it out then your overrun should slide off the roll pin mabe a little stuck hit it fairly hard use something a little smaller than the hole goodluck

If it has 2 grease zerks, there is a roll pin through the hole in the shaft under them.

Remove zerks, flush out grease, and you will see.

Often pin is worn, or broke, and hard to get out. Can be more jammed on with bits of broken roll pin.....

If ORC spins both ways, likely the dogs, or teeth, are worn off or busted. They would not be holding the ORC onto the tractor shaft tho.

Sounds like the roll pin you drive out has maybe bent and if so they can be bears to driver out. You need to find where it is then use a punch and hammer to drive it out. If you can not do that then the only other way would be to cut the ORC in 2 so you can remove it and doing that is a real pain

The over-running clutch should spin in one direction only when working properly.
You say the coupler spins in both directions "on the shaft".
If it spins on the shaft I would guess the roll pin must be sheared off.
If the roll pin is truly sheared off, it should be possible to force the coupler off the end of the shaft by either using a puller or a pry bar.

post a pic if you can't find plugs or grease zerks on it. the pin holding it on is under there. will have to rotate to line it up. may need a probe.. they are a wear items. the dogs wear out faster if not greased.

papa t,

I don't know how it works on a live PTO, but on my Ford 2000, I engage the PTO (with the engine stopped, of course), remove the two grease zerks (or one plug and one grease zerk, depending on what you have on that overrunning clutch), and rotate the outer portion of the overrunning clutch until I find one end of the roll pin that is holding the clutch onto the PTO shaft.

Then, I bought a drift punch that is just a tiny bit smaller in diameter than the roll pin, so I can hammer the roll pin out of the overrunning clutch.

Takes a couple of minutes to install or a couple of minutes to remove.

Good luck,

Thanks for basically assuring me the pin was under there some where. Finally punched in the right place and got the pin out. ORC had worn out...PTO still good. Thanks for the "inside" knowledge.

once you get the new one on, just shoot some grease into it every time you grease the tractor for work.. etc.
