Garden Mulch

I have grass/alfalfa mix and bean straw. I put down about an inch of grass/alfalfa mix around the squash. I want to keep in moisture and block weeds.

What are your thoughts about that, and finishing the rest of the garden. I have to open bales to do it, but would like to get rid of bean straw first.

Years ago when I put out a big garden, I would till it in the fall. Have all my neighbors put their leafs on the garden, a foot or more of leafs. Come spring I pulled the leafs aside, planted garden. By late summer, most of the leafs were gone.

See my post below to Guido, Put grass clippings on my garden. Use anything to hold the moisture, decompose and it's health for the soil.

I use grass clippings on my garden all the time and it sure helps. Just wish I had a lot more of them

Yes and if you have a hammer mill or some such thing to grind it up better then you would be a good bit ahead on things since the finer it is the better it will compost and also slow down weeds etc

I've used straw and grass clippings as it helps to keep the moisture and to smother weeds. It's very dry here in MD even though we received over 7 inches of rain last month. There isn't much left to plow under when its time clean off the garden. I cut off the bean vines with a big Toro mower and plow them under too. I don't keep the tomato vines. Hal
