got a ceiling fan in the bedroom that has such a loud hum to it that is hard to sleep. Seems to be getting progressively louder. Blades are clean and tight. There is no wobble. Any ideas?

Hello korfused,

Humming is usually an electrical noise, not a mechanical one. I usually keep the capacitor when I get rid of old fans. Sometimes replacing them quiets the fan down,Lubricating the motor might help some. Low speed is the best scenario for humming fans.

does it have an electronic speed control? Ie wall or remote control?
Thos can also cause excessive motor hum.

Thanks for all the ideas. It does have a light but the globe is tight. No dial adjust for speed- just the pull chain. It does do it worse at slower speeds. Looks like I will have to take it down and tear it apart. I just don't remember these having a place to add oil. My to-do list is growing faster than the weeds in the garden (which is never ending)!

If you have a dimmer switch in place of a regular on-off switch that is designed for incandescent lights that will make the motor hum. They make special variable controls that are designed for fans. They cost a little more.
