Gypsy's new scam

Florida gets more than it's share of gypsy scams and just realized they have a new one. Multiple listings on Craigslist for baseboard,chairrail and crown molding. They "deliver because of the 16' length" and place in your house. They scope out your place and wander around. 4 guys to unload a few boxes. If you give a check there goes you account number. Watch out! They returned and cleaned out the house a few days later!! Law enforcement is clueless so protect yourself.

Tar-mac your driveway, Sir? over here in the British Isles ...then off goes the contents of your house a few days later!

I grew up in SC. A large sect of the Irish Travelers are "based" near Augusta. If you want you whole house painted for $300 or your driveway sealed for $400, they"ll be *glad* do it for you! You can also expect to see the new paint job or driveway seal wash off in the first heavy rain.

Basically they"re nice folks BUT - buyer beware! You get what you pay for!

It"s time for them to be making the circuit again. Do some research on them.

About 15-18 years ago they were going around our area. They would charge by buckets of paint, once you paid, take the buckets. Some of them would end up at the next job.

What a shame. The traveler showed up here about a month ago to paint barns and roofs, same man has been here every year for over 40 years. He has a grandson with him the last few years. He is aware of the scams but I have never heard of him running any. Guess there are bad in every group.

Had one stop and offer to paint my barn roofs this week. Might be honest, but I'm doing it myself. Then I have only me to blame if it washes off in the rain. Same deal with driveway sealing--too easy to thin or water down the material. Looks good for a bit, but I don't want to do it again right away.

Back home in NE Mo. it was the "blacktop your driveway" scam, (because we are in the area). My father in law, and several other locals fell for it. Up front price was for 4 inches of asphalt. They fail to disclose that is the pre-rolled thickness. All said and done, he had an 1 1/2 of blacktop, with grass growing through the cracks. He did say the funny sight was the two 300# fat guys riding the back of the machine, to keep it mashed down even further!
