OT Lethargic chick

Bought two American pullets (one gray and one tan) yesterday at a bird fair to join the young Rhode Island Reds. The expected tussling went on, soon the Americanas just stayed away from the RIR. When the RIR went outside the Americanas went in and vise versa. Everything looked fine last night and this morning the Americanas were sleeping in the nesting box. I get home tonight and they are still there. The gray one is fine but the tan one is very lethargic. To the point that she won't stand. I can't see any physical signs of injury.

I forced her about 2ml of Pediasure and a couple of granules of feed. Anything else you think I should do for her? I will try to give you guys an update in the morning. Thanks!

They kind of give up if they have gone to the bottom of he pecking order. It is kind of like they are in a depression about not having any friends.

I have a turkey in one of the chicken houses because the other turkeys were picking on her and making her bleed. She pouted like that for several days but has snapped out of it. Interestingly enough she stopped growing and is the same size as the hens - half of the size of the other turkeys.

I'm worried about the extreme lethargy. If she is that far down she may be a goner. It's possible that she has coccidiosis as well. I'd watch them and if you seen signs in the others start medicating the water.

The only live chicks I will bring on this farm come in the mail at a day old. They are just too touchy. The first sign of sickness is usually death.

Whewwwwwwww when I saw that post I was afraid your wife or girlfriend was too lazy to cook your supper or darn your socks or something lol

Not meaning to lecture - but you really should quarantine new chickens for a week or so before mixing with the flock. You never know what you're getting at a fair like that.

It's can be a pain, but worth it when you end up with a sick one.

If it's still down - I'd quarantine it even if it's a little too late. Watch for any other symptoms. Maybe some tetracycline in her water for a week.

I've personally found that trying to patch up sick chickens is like fixing a tractor by buying all new parts. Research symptoms on the web and you'll find from all the "experts" out there that you chicken's got everything from an upset stomach to the black plague.

Love the responses about it being the wife. I know I should keep them separate but I don't have the facilities to do that properly. She is doing much better, still having trouble walking but will drink and eat on her own if placed infront of her and she in alert. I found the culprit rooster and he is in a cage in the coop so as not to be able to bother either of them. Hopefully after seeing them but not chasing them for a few days will settle him down. Thanks everyone!

(quoted from post at 09:09:25 07/02/13) John,
My brother in law married a lethargic chick.
LA in WI

Ditto... He's a slouch too...

Match made in heaven.

I dated a Lethargic Chick once. I told her I was selling my TV and couch to buy farm equipment. She promptly left.
