what year did ford start using the 7.3 diesel engine in their pickups. I know they started with the 6.9 non turbo , went to using turbos in them and then 7.3, just not sure which year. thanks

The 7.3 was added in 88/89(?).The first ones were naturally aspirated.I installed lots of 'Banks' turbos when I worked in a diesel shop back in the '90s.

87 or 88 they went to 7.3. 87 was the last yr of 6.9 when then. im not sure if they did use the 7.3 in 87 or not i think they did but if not they definitaly used them in 88. 94 1/2 they switched from the idi 7.3 to the 7.3 powerstroke

the Model yrs in Pickups 83 to 87 the 6.9 Non-Turbo
7.3 Non-Turbo in 88 to 94 trucks
7.3 Turbo in 93/94 trucks
7.3 Power Strokes 93.5 to 2003.5
Hope this helps!

The aftermarket had kits. I had a co-worker who put a Banks turbo on his 6.9 and he still works it hard.

John, you are off a year. In 94 they offered 3 7.3 engines. a non turbo IDI,a turbo IDI and second half of the year they had the DI turbo. In 95 they started badged those as Powerstrokes. As far as I know, all 93's were naturally aspirated.

On the other end, they had the 7.3 and 6.slow both available in 03, not being sure they could sell the new engine to everyone who was looking for a new truck.
