Well the electric motor on my hay elevator was starting to give me trouble blowing the breaker , well just finished filling my loft and it started smoking , not good took it off and took to a electric repair shop they said it is unrepairable.

It was a Wagner Electric 1 1/2 horse motor
to replace it the guy said around $ 350.00
my question is would a gas engine be able to run this elevator ??
looked at harbor Freight they have a engine side shaft
for around $120.00
any Ideas on how big a motor I would need.
Thanks Greg

Just a guess, but I'd say about 5-6h.p. We ran a 32' with a 1h.p. electric without any problems for years. A lot depends on speed of the chain. With the one we had 3 bales on the chain was good load, more than that would bury the guy in the mow.

Tractor Supply in central Ohio has a capacitor run 1 1/2 hp for
$150.

Power isn't the only issue:
no sparks
easy starting
quiet
no running out of gas

just sayin'

A gas engine will run at 3000 rpm or more so how would you slow the drive down you will need a jackshaft more pulleys and soon you will have more in the gas drive than a new electric.

You will be messing around getting it to run after the first year. I agree with going back with electric. If you have a smaller tractor you could also put a PTO shaft on it. I have a Farmall A that's perfect for bale elevator duty.

Back in the day when hay was all small bales there were a lot of hay elevators with gas motors
Never heard of one starting a fire those briggs motors I think most were about 8 hp start every time put the right size pulleys on motor and elevator shaft they had power to spare fill elevator full of hay it will pull it

I'll keep a spare motor on hand for my elevator and grain augers that use electric motors. I pick them up cheap at Farm Auctions. I bring them home and check them out and have them ready to go. If a motor goes I have one sitting there to get me going again without allot of delay. I have seen them cheap on Craig's List too. Most the motors I got for 5-10 bucks when nobody's paying attention at an auction. If one doesn't work when I get it home its not like its a major loss.

We have a 1/2 hp 1800 rpm on our 40 ft conveyor, it used to be 60
ft. The bales get sent up butt to butt on a 45 degree.

We also have a 1/2 hp 3600 rpm on our 24 ft conveyor but it runs
very fast, hard to get more than 4 bales on it, usually only 2-3
bales.
