SD Memory Cards

Okay, so I have a few older devices that have maybe 2 or 4 GB SD cards and I know they work. When I'm shopping for new cards many (higher capacity, maybe 4 or 8 or more???) are SDHC. I seem to recall in some older device that use SD cards SDHC will not work.

Was there a breakdown like over 4 or 8 GB they have to be SDHC ??? Will an SDHC work in an older device that used an SD???

Check your camera manual, as they usually specify the largest capacity that it is capable of addressing.

Hi John, I believe it depends on how many address lines the device supports. I have an older laptop that only supports up to 4GB SD but newer laptop supports 64GB SD cards. Old Sony camera only supports 2GB SD cards. I bought a USB adapter that supports all models of SD and microSD cards for my older laptop.
The other consideration for cameras is that most newer cameras with high mega pixel photos require a class 10 or faster SD card so you can take pictures or movies without pauses.

Having been shopping just today for a new HD camcorder, I can tell You that it would be best to take the card, & or camera to a retailer, & ask someone with experience. Salesperson I talked too said there are about 12 - 15 different types of cards. 2, 3, or maybe 4 might work; but figuring it out what will is the problem. Just some that I remember were...

1) SD
2) SDX
3) SDHC
4) SDHCX

Then You have different quality levels. Class #'s. Class 1 - 10; 10 being the best picture, video, & color. I didn't discuss anything below a 10. I want the best picture possible.

By the way, thanks for reminding me why I retired. I used to spend hours poring thru that sort of spec at work, and don't miss it a bit.

Hey John T - I think whether or not larger (4GB, 8GB and up) cards will work depends on the device.

I have an older Sony camera that will not work with any card larger than 2GB. Also an older USB "universal" card reader that won't recognize cards larger than 4GB.

Incidentally for digital photography I won't use cards larger than 8GB. I don't like "putting all my eggs in one basket" (one card) when shooting important photos. Better to spread important photos across 2 or 3 cards so if one card fails (and they do!) you don't lose it all.

Besides.....8 gig cards can be purchased CHEAP anymore.

Class is a measure of write speed, not necessarily quality. It is a rating of the card's ability to have data written to it at a given # of MB per second. You can almost certainly expect higher numbers in the future.

The hc card will not fit in our Canon. I know too large of a compact flash would not work in my 3000 AgLeader. Just more of the planned obsolescence so they can SELL!

Try asking your question at the manufacturer's on-line technical support site. I get a useful response about 50 percent of the time that way.

Owner's manuals often don't specify a maximum card size. Some manufacturer's will tell you what size and speed of cards a certain device was verified to work with during their factory testing. Often manufacturers don't re-test an older device when newer technology is introduced.

An 8Gb or 16 Gb Class 10 card is maybe $10 to $25? Try one and see if it works, if not you can likely use thee new card in something else in the near future.

It helps to download or backup the important information on memory cards to a DVD or a hard drive, just in case of failures.

I have an ancient MP3 player that says it will only work with 256 mb SD ram.
However I fill up an 8 gig with albums and it works fine.

I think a newer device that requires higher speed memory will not work properly with the older slower ships but have found no reason that the faster chips will not work in older hardware.

Hello John T,

Older SD cards like the one on the left, will work on newer devices. The transfer rate is VERY SLOW, SOOO!!!!!! here come the new SDHC The 8MB on the picture has a transfer rate of 30MB/s It will record full HD video. Some older printers will only read up to 2 MB cards. Micro SD on the left is 2 MB and will work with adapter just fine.
