Loud transmission

I swapped all the shafts and gears from one F-20 transmission to another, and yesterday when I rolled the tractor around the shop the transmission sounded growly and noisy. There's no transmission fluid in it yet, could that be what's causing it to be so loud? Has anyone else experienced this? I'm worried enough that I might take it apart and check it out.

Did yo set the bearing pre-loads to the new case or just moved the whole thing like it was??? Bearing preloads have to be set to every shaft, bearing, and case. If you do not then the nearing maybe too tight or too loose. Too loose will let the gears mesh be too deep and then they will make noise. Too tight and the shaft will turn too hard.

The lube will make it a little quieter but not a lot. At the slow speed you are going pushing it. The transmission should be quiet.

I vote that you will need to try again on the switch.

I will have to agree with JD Seller, Best to make sure everything is right BEFORE you go to the field, than have to drag it back to the shop from the back 40.

Since the shafts are all on ball bearings, preload shouldn't be much of an issue. But the biggest thing I would be worried about is the ring and pinion mesh. Also, if you changed all the shafts I'm guessing you probably have a different pinion gear running in the old ring gear? Don't forget you're dealing with big straight cut gears and they will be noisy even when everything's right.

I reset the mesh between the ring and pinion. The sound seems like its coming from directly under the transmission cover. I may take the cover off again and have a look, roll the tractor and see for sure what's making the noise.

Sounds like a good idea. If the shafts aren't shimmed right you could have something binding, either a bearing or maybe there's some gear clash when the rails are in the detents. I'm assuming you must have put a fast 4th transmission in it? Did you use the shifter cover from the donor tractor?

Not for sure, just trying to think of possibilities. Maybe a bent shifting fork or one in a different position could cause some interference. Besides, the gear positions are different in a fast 4th. I'd change the cover too if you have it.
