Mark, with all due respect... this is one of those times where it just needs torn apart to find out what's wrong. Short of a bent exhaust push rod as been suggested he's either got a burn valve or a bent valve stem or an adjustment issue preventing the valve from closing. These are interference fit engines so the piston is generally going to knock the valve home anyway. It's of the greatest importance that he gets in there now and finds the problem and fixes it before it makes a much bigger problem. One valve and grind is not a big fix along with a head gasket.

Thanks Rod for being polite. Guy comes on here with a problem. No idea as to history. Lots of guys use no upper cyl lube, lug engines, leave them idle in cold temps for hours on end and all, run oil that you could use for chocolate syrup that was changed a couple of years ago I think, and on and on. Leaves the solution open to the imagination, mine anyway.
