WHO tractor ride in Sioux city IA this weekend. IIRC it is a three day ride that comes back to town each night. They expected 300+ tractors, I don't know how many they had but they were nice to look at. Some pics here

Me too, but even I can see too many he's and M's. Just goes against the grain to take too many Deere pictures lol

How do you get that kind of participation. We have a tractor ride for St Jude and it is becoming hard to get a dozen tractors to participate. We supply a free meal at the end of the ride. One day event and ride about 20 miles. We have collected about 25 K in the last 6 years.

I wish I knew. I only heard about it about 1 or 2 days before it started. I believe it is sponsored by a radio station but not for sure. I was too busy to go on it so I only got to see what was parked in the lot on Sunday night.

WHO is a big radio station in Des Moines, Iowa. Use to be back in the day after sun down they could crank their wattage and the station could be heard 1,000 miles away. I don"t know the full history of the ride, but they use to go similar to RAGBRI (big bike ride in Iowa) and go from town to town over several nights. I know the gentle man that was a big part in the ride died here a couple of years ago. I looked into going on it a few years back, but the insurance requirements at that time plus entry fee made it a bit too rich for my blood.

I drove in the "Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade" a couple weeks ago. There was a total of 530 tractors. This annual 3-day ride is organized the past 12-13 yrs by WMT, a radio station in Cedar Rapids, IA. Drivers come from as far away as CA and VA, and many from MN, IL, and WI. They announce the dates and route in January; a friend of mine in IA immediately calls me with that info and I immediately line up motel rooms. You then google "WMT Tractorcade" for the entry forms, rules, etc. Then you get your entry sent in pronto as those Iowans are avid riders in this event and they have a limit to entries.

They set up 7 "speed groups"; slowest go first in morning then following groups follow with faster speeds. Speed is not a contest, it is what you want to cruise at. I get in 3rd group, at 13 mph, and my H Farmall is at low throttle so I can see the scenery and relax. There is a group leader and tail end driver. Police, deputies and IA hwy patrol are everywhere and they wave us thru stop signs and red lights...rarely every stop while driving. Rules are strict; no passing, no hot rodding, no stopping except for breakdowns, etc.

Lunches are served at rural churches, noon meals at large high schools. I think we averaged 100 calories per mile this yr.
