anyone on here work with air conditioners ??? i need a new one and was wondering if i can use my old A-coil, which is useing R22 with a new unit useing the 401, or whatever they use now ?????

It is possible to change the piston or expansion valve to make it work with 410a but you really need to Change the a-coil to do it right, they have different types of oils and it can causes problems down the road.

Not advised. Pressures are much higher on 401. I would advise changing everything, even the lines.

Keeping your old A coil is like buying a new car with old used tires.

Most leak Happend in the A coil. Better off getting a new inside coil. The new coil are rifle in side what I am reading .for some reason hair spray will eat a coil up fast.

thanks, just wanted to learn a little before priceing another unit, mines 18 years old and starting to give me some trouble, the r22 around here is $40.00 a pound...

Jim,
Rural Kings sells R22 replacement. It is made from propane instead of methane. Some people claim you can mix the two. R22 replacement requires less freon. I think one can still buy 30# of the real 22 for $450 ? +++? $15/#.

If you have a heat pump, 18 years is long enough. If you only use your a/c a few months a year, then 18 is still young. I've gotten over 30 years out of an a/c. Need to clean condensor, oil fan motors, make sure suction line isn't freezing up, some condensate on suction line. I would run it until it dies completely. Then find an a/c with the highest seer. Some may want to sell you the older 22 systems cheaper, be careful, R22 was taken out of production in 2010, only going to get more expensive.

I just changed out my 23 year old unit and had the same question I bit the bullet and changed the air handler also. I am glad I did the air flow and cooling are greatly improved. Its so much better I can run it a few deg warmer and still be comfortable...
