Hydraulic oil

What are you guys using for a multi brand farm? I have 4 different brands of tractors on the farm and dont feel like going to 4 different dealers and stocking 4 different brands of oil for each tractor. The tractors i have are a IH 1086, JD 3130, Ford 5000, and a MF 245. Is there an oil that will meet the specs for each of these tractors without causing issues?

I'm almost afraid to answer this, Super Steve. Asking or replying to an oil question on this forum is like jumping into a snake pit !! I have the same problem, we are color blind around here, 5 brands, add in a swather, backhoe, skid steer & etc.,thats a variety ! We buy / use Car-Quest label premium tractor fluid. Has the right spec numbers for everything we have and have been using this for 7 years now. Not trying to sell Car Quest's oil for them, there are others out there. For us there are only two choices if we buy local, & this one is the best deal for us. Good luck Steve, flack jacket is on, helmet on, fox hole dug, now diving for cover ! KEN

The only thing that really comes to mind for me is the wet brakes on these tractors. Different additives affect them in different ways. Some times even using the latest oil from same dealer can have adverse effects in a tractor that has not given a problem. Sooooo, it gets to be crap shoot. I do know one of my friends uses John Deere hy-guard in all of his IH tractors and it gets mixed with the Versatile and Cat also with no problems I have seen.

Read the specs on the label, on the oil jug,
to see if it meets the specs in your tractor
manual.....and...My neighbor pays $15 per Quart
for Cub cadet branded oil for his garden tractor.
I pay $15 per Gallon for Farm-Fleet brand hytran
than meets the same spec, according to the jug label, mine works ok, why pay more?

I went on the hunt for tractor hydraulic oil 2010. Was running JD and the price got way to high for me. Switch to McCormick and dealer went out of business. Then found Mobil Fluid 424 in my area from a Exxon distributor Price started out reasonable and in 18 months it was $92 per 5 gal. pail.

Read on another tractor site that Cat dealers in my area carry Mobil Fluid 424. E-mailed the supplier for Carter Cat in my area and got a quote for $62.85. I'm happy. They stock about 50 pails and it's there when I need it. I use it in a Deutz Fahr agrofarm 100. Wet clutch, shuttle, front dif. and hubs use the same oil. It's a little heavier oil than JD but it's done great in my Deutz.

I also have multiple brands and have done considerable research and have settled on 2 brands that meet all the usual specs. Last change and have bought for next time.
Chevron 1000 THF
Also, Mobil Mobilfluid 424
Both are very good, use the Chevron because it is orange and you can spot any leaks.
Chevron 1000 THF meets Agco 821XL, John Deere J20C, Ford New Holland, ESN-M2C134-D and FNHA2 C0201, Massey Ferguson M1135 M1141 M1143, White Q-1826, Case JIC 143 145 MS1206 1207 1209 MS 1210 TCH, Oliver Q-1705, Minn-Moline Q-1766 1722 1766B,Catepillar TO-2, Renk Doromat 874A 874B, Kubota UDT, International Harvester 86, Volvo WB 101
Flash Point o degree F 455, Pout Point -44, Viscosity Index 145.

Just paid 73.50 per 5 gallon bucket. Could get off brand cheaper, but will not risk Hydrostatic trans, wet brakes, IPTO etc.

Have been using Wal-Mart oil for the last couple years. $45-50 vs $65+. The allis tractors seem to go through enough of it that it adds up over the year. Engine oil is another matter. Only Rotella T Triple. It meets JD spec J20B and J20C.

I buy my oil from a reputable oil supplier. A barrel of hyd/trans fluid, and a barrel of 15W40 does most everything on the farm. I have changed suppliers over the years as they have sold out, gone out, etc.- Which means a brand change. It has not been an issue.

I use Hy-Tran Ultra in the old IH and CIH stuff. JD Hy-Gard in everything else which includes MF's and MM's. If the IH/CIH compartment doesn't have wet clutches or brakes, I also add the appropriate amount of the CIH anti-wear additive used with Hytran in skid steer hydrostatic transmissions. Probably could just use Hygard rather than Hytran when spiking it with the anti-wear additive.
