You win some....

Had a cat die out by the barn and a couple days later I found a couple 6ish week old kittens looking dehydrated and hungry. Against my better judgement I put them in a dog carrier in the basement and wet to town and got them some food. They ate well and drank and this morning my wife found one of them had died, I just came in and found the other one dead also. My guess from the looks of the cat is feline distemper. I don't get too attached to the barn cats but I'm sure not looking forward to the wife coming home to an empty cage.

Erik,
This is part of life and death on the farm. I know it is not a pleaseant thing to see. But it is just that. You win some and you lose some.

We are getting upwards of 30 cats now on the farm. My wife has a knack of befriending th little ones, she doeswnt even try, they just walk up to her.....

Then a person gets attached, and there you are, what do you do....

Just had a stray with us for a while, over winter, he came up sick 2 weeks ago, now he's gone. See if the shots do any good, we try to give the homegrown cats we can catch one shot when they are half grown, give them a chance, and hope they stay in the barn and take care of some of the little furry critters around here.

The entertainment they offer us, as well as critter control, is worth the catfood, hassles, and one shot we give them.

Now, if your wife wants 2 cats, we probably can spare acouple..... ;)

All stories involving cats around here start with "against my better judgement".

I was talked into getting all 5 fixed. Believe it or not, I haven't chewed any up in a tractor and the coyotes haven't gotten any. We have had the same ones for years. Maybe it wasn't a mistake?! I think we were just lucky to end up with some that are careful and some that are too lazy to leave the shed.

I draw the line at hauling them to town for shots. The dogs get them, but no other "pets".

You're not alone, went out this morning to feed some hatchling turtles I've raised for release and something took all of them. Its a hobby but I look forward to seeing them everyday, probably a raccoon, so now I'll set the trap out, 10 months raising them for nothing, and now I know theres more things going on outside at night then I thought, SSS .......

At one time i had 9 strays that showed up or picked up and If they behave themselves they can stay. most ran off never saw before but two...coco and cotton have stayed with us for about 7 or 8 years now. Barn cats and they seem to have plenty to do.

Dont really mind cats, few years ago all our cats either died or
disappeared!! Dont have any livestock so dont have any grain but
like overnight the RATS moved in! Never had had trouble with
them before! We had couple dogs that we kept in kennels! Rats
chewed thru plastic trash cans we kept dog food in to get to it so
got metal cans!! They actually had a path to to the kennels to get to
dog food!! Didnt want to poison them as didnt want the stink of
dead rats lieing around!! Gal from town brought out mother cat
and 4 kittens that she didnt want!! With in 2_3 wks the rats
disappeared (moved out), ever since make sure have at least couple
cats!!! Have heard since that rats move in collonies and will move
out if feel threatened!!!!

We had all of our farm cats fixed. Was a great choice. Had one of them for 22 years before she died. Another one is around 16 or so now (see pic below). They keep the mice from eating on my tractor wires.

Maybe I ought to get some for my barn. I do have the use of my neighbors barn cats. But I don't understand how they know to spend Thursday night walking up and down the hood of whatever tractor I'm showing Friday. Grrr!
