Farmall H Engine Swap

I have a Farmall H and I want to get into pulling. The H has a cracked block. I found a fresh rebuilt 175 cubic inch out of farmall 350 complete engine. Can I bolt it in. Will it take any custom fitting. Would I be able to pull improved or have to pull modified. Also the clutch will the h clutch bolt to 350 fly wheel or ?? I know transmission splines are different. Or use 350 basket with H disc...

The blocks are identical everywhere it's important.

You will need to swap the front engine cover over from the H engine, because the ignition mounts are slightly different, unless your H was made after 1950.

Don't know about the clutch. Are you sure the splines are different? I think the transmission input shaft splines in the clutch plates are the same. Worst case you have to use the H flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate.

I'm not positive on the clutch yet. I haven't got her split yet.
Just looked up new clutches and the 350 and H have different
number of splines and pilot bushing size.

With a complete engine you don't have to change anything on the front. The other things you will run into is the control arm on the governor is different and you will probably have to change the two rear left side head studs to be able to mount the throttle linkage bracket for the H. The H flywheel will bolt to the crankshaft so you can mix and match the clutch parts however it works best for you. A custom built clutch disk should be available without too much hassle from places like Hy-Capacity or Ag Parts.

Before you get wild and crazy switching engines, check the rules where your going to pull. Our club says STOCK BLOCK so if you showed up and we see a 350 block it's back on the trailer with you. Now if you pull the sleeves out and put the 350 pistons and cam and rods in a H block your good to go. Heee Heeee.....

Thanks to everyone for the info. And most the clubs around here do say stock block but h and 350 blocks are so similar... I will chance it at those events I think. I really hate that the rules are written that way. Like you said if my block wasn't junk I could punch it out and have the same thing and be legal. I just attended a local pull and a gentlemen with a so called stock C swept 3500 4000 stock and improved classes. He was competitive with the Oliver 77s turning high Rpm. Don't know what his secret is but obviously getting away with something. I just have a beautiful restored H with a junk block, and enjoy pulling so why not compete.

If the rules are the original block or it's [b:ab820d0da4][u:ab820d0da4]replacement part number[/u:ab820d0da4][/b:ab820d0da4] you could make a good argument for the 350 block. If you were to buy a replacement block in the late '50s or later that is the one you would get after the original stock of H blocks were gone. A replacement block would not have come with a serial number stamped on it.

Ahhhhh Another "honest" puller in the making.

I just love how all these antque tractor pullers "bend" the rules just as bad as the big boys.

So you tell the guy to take a "stock" block and remove the sleeves and run larger piston an then giggle about it.

These are the reasons I have not watched a tractor pull in years. The winners fall into just a couple of categories. 1) The deep pocket guy with big money in a pulling tractor. 2)Or the guy that has cheated the best so he has an advantage over all the other pullers. Neither are the type I want to waste my time on.

If your going to use the 350 engine. Get rid of the dip stick it's a dead giveaway. We have a guy that put a dip stick in a H block and was accused of a 350 block. Thankfully his block and ser tag match.

Seller I respect your opinion and won't start a arguement. But there is nothing stock about tractor pulling anymore. So if your going to spend the time, why not make it run as good as possible for the same money as a stock rebuild? All 5 of my pullers are way more stock than most and I do well with them and I figure I just donate my money. Ive won against strokers and poked engines and cut tires . If he's new I would hate to see him build a engine and get whooped on and discouraged and never pull again. If he's like the rest of us with your self included he probably has LIMITED income to spend on a hobby . Respectfully Trucker

The way I look at it. I do not have a lot of money to spend. But if every tractor out there were "Stock" you would see like four models pull well and that's about it. It would discourage pullers and crowds alike. Another point is these tractors are getting old. Less handy,, It's nice to see a tractor for a propose other then two Parades a year. I will take Seeing a Cheated up tractor on the track over a stock tractor going in for scrap any day.

To Super Trucker and Newbee Puller. I would just like everyone to admit they are messing around with the tractors. There are ZERO stock tractors pulling anymore. So lets just call it Modified Antique tractors. So much weight and or under a certain speed.
