I have an older semi worth about 6 grand. A guy wants to trade me his 66 Chevy Impala 327 ss for it. Yes, iknow, not enough info, but is that car worth anything, considering it is in fair condition?

Checked NADA prices, although I had to list our zip code. The link below is to the NADA page. You can search it for your zip code and prices. Hope it helps.

How much it's worth depends upon many things but it should be worth more than $6K if a real SS and decent.

While I personally don't like the body style of the Impala after 1964, as the feller says, They ain't making them any more. So, since it is a SS and if it runs and is drivable, YES, I think I would go for it! That 327 was one tough engine! I bought a new 64 Impala and that thing would run like a scalded dog, and was capable of 20 mpg. (Not both at the same time, lol) But by using a lot of self control, I actually did get 20mpg on a tank of gas. The rest of the time I couldn't keep my foot out of the four barrel.

Hoofer, check the vin and if it's a true numbers matching SS jump all over the deal. If a true SS it's worth a lot more than the tractor.

BTW, I own a numbers matching '68 Chevelle SS 396.

You have given us very little information, but it wouldn't be hard for that '66 to be worth $6,000. I love vintage Impalas, (every year but 1967).

66 Impala V8? Chances are excellent that it came with the 327 especially if is a true SS, although could have come with a 283, slimmer chances that it came with a 396 Powerglide like a Caprice that I had from Grandma, 100% stock. A true SS could have been a Muncie M21 4 speed, I don't think an M22, or could have been a Powerglide 2 speed automatic, will have a center console between the front buckets. '66 was my second favorite next to the '68. I had a '68, factory 396 and last year of manual transmission in full sized, M21 in my case. For their size, both remarkably light especially for BBs to motivate. Wish I had it back. Stupid, stupid, stupid me. I've done a lot of stupid things in my lifetime, but not being perfect makes life more interesting.

Good luck in your decision.

327 Impala values you might find interesting

I'll vouch for the mileage. I had a 63 Impala with a 327 automatic. Watch your foot and it would easily go over 20 mpg. plus had the extra power if you needed it. They always say run them like your gonna run em when new. I checked it out on the 1/4 when I brought it home. No problems except for the rust termites that finally got it.

Check the Vin, the engine numbers, component numbers. The more that match the better. How many owners? The more documentation the better. I have a n old 68 Barracuda 383 Form S Fastback I bought new, and have all the paperwork. That triples the value of the car.

I too like the earlier SS Impalas, especially the 64.

I had two 64 SS Impalas, a yellow/black convertible with 327/250 and powerglide and a Palomar Red (burgundy) hardtop with 327/300 and Muncie four speed.

The 66 is probably my least favorite aside from the 69 but still a nice looking classic car.

Go to ebaymotors.com and go from there.
This will give you a starting point.
It would be nice to have the space to have an old car as an investment. (I know of 2 old coworkers that made money buying and storing an old car) 1 guy bought a 66 GTO for $4,500 about 20 years ago. I do not know if he sold it after I quit the company.

My one weakness in cars is SS Chevies. I'll echo the others saying check and make sure it's a REAL SS and if so it's worth a lot more than your tractor. My neighbor across the road turns out SS Chevies at a rate of about 3 a year, and none of them are real. He still gets close to $10K for them.

$6000 is about $3000 to much. The 68/69/70 would be worth it, but not a 66. If it was a Chevelle it would be worth it. Go to any of the Car cruises in Pa and they are full up with the 65/66 Inmpala SS models. You can put a ton of money into an average car to make it look nice.

Is it a 4 Door ? The only old cars you see that cheap in Ohio are 4 doors and parts or really in bad shape cars.

Don't think SS came in a 4 door version. I agree with the others- it would have to be in pretty sorry shape not to be worth more than your semi.

I was wondering about that as I posted. I'm not up on car variations much. I wasted all my time on John Deeres.

I'm sure there are now more SS models out there now then were ever built too. Everyone sticks SS emblems on them. When the items become worth alot the crooks come out of the woodwork.

Do you like the car and is the car worth $6000 to you regardless of its actual market price? If not, the current owner should be able to sell the car and then negotiate with you for cash on your truck.

Before trading I would look the car over closely for the correct and matching body and engine numbers. Also look for rust, especially under the floor pans. It could cost $15,000 to fix it up into a $7,500 car. Did those cars have the X-Frames like the full size Buicks?

Can you take the car to an appraiser?

By now there should be a lot of information available on the internet about those cars. In the 1990's MBI (Motor Books International) published some "Illustrated Buyer's Guide"s for a wide variety of car models. They probably published one for Chevy's. The books highlight the options available and they can be an enjoyable read. Classic Motorbooks, Osceola, WI 1-800-826-6600, or E-bay are good sources for those books.

The only thing I can say about that deal... is if you want rid of the truck and want the car... do the deal. Neither you or him may value the car at 6 grand... but he may not value the truck at 6 grand either... lol
To me... older semi worth 6 grand means mid 90's with an N14, 13 speed and serviceable tires; otherwise roadable.
