How NOT to haul your tractor.

Saw this today. No TIEDOWNS, but the straps are laying on the trailer behind the jeeps front tires. This really PO's me because this is what ends up in the news sitting on a car full of kids. Sorry bout the fuzzy pics, they don't transfer from video well.

That's when a phone book in the car comes in handy. A quick call to the proper authorities...

Yep, gonna kill someone innocent. By the way your passenger did a good job with that video :).

Sounds like a case of....Joe, did you tie down the car? No Bob, I thought you did! Oh no there it goes passing us!

Need to have one last walk around before taking off.

While I agree that it's poorly/improperly tied down, there is at least one chain underneath of the the center of the rear of the vehicle. I can't make out anyting toward the front.

Sad to say, but non-commercial haulers get away with this kind of stuff all of the time.

They didn't forget to tie it down. Either the straps wouldn't fit over the oversize tires, or they just had no clue.

$100 says they made it to their destination with no problems. By dumb luck of course.

My experience says that stuff on a trailer typically goes forward. So that jeep has a better chance of ending up off the front of the trailer and piled up against the towing truck then on top of some car. Not that it wasn't so smart to tie it down that way.

it's still a bad tie down. If I saw that I wouldn/t hestitate to call the bears.

Now if we could get these knuckle heads to tie down mattress and ladders better...

you have a good point, Jon.

It does appear there are some chains. Now, if it's straight down to the trailer axle as it might appear, donno what that does to the trailer suspension.... Perhaps it is torsion rubber and doesnt matter, but all the same, sure looks like an odd job of it.

Yep, all the time. My dash cam was the best money I've spent. Gives me some good stuff for facebook. lol. Here's a couple. What you can't tell from these vids is that I'm on the brakes hard to keep from hittin these people.

A few years back some of the guys working for the company here were sent out on a stormy night to clear some trees from the road. Took a medium sized excavator on a Alabama trailer. Moved one tree, loaded and headed for the next. No tie down. Went around a curve and the excavator slid right off into the ditch on it's side. Did quite a bit of damage too. Amazingly, no one lost their job.

If it was me behind that loose Jeep I would have called the cops. I have seen some bad wrecks and this has got "OH SHHHHHIIIIIITTTTTT" written all over it.

From what I can see I don't really see a problem... it looks to me like it's cross tied ahead and back on the rear axle and I'd guess probably the same on the front axle. Some things just don't lash down very well so you work with what ya got.

Hey, give the pickup driver some credit. He did signal when he almost disappeared under your front bumper. LOL TDF

I once had a lady have a shopping emergency right in front of my triaxle dump truck in pouring rain. She was just getting by me in the left lane when she saw that the exit was right there. So she changed into my lane right in front of me and hit the brakes. I quickly went into ABS mode and was gaining rapidly on her. I checked the left lane and there was room so I made a quick lane change. The back end broke traction, and then I was going sideways. I hit the gas and brought it back. Wish I had a dash cam.

saw that happen in WV also. Came off in a curve into the middle of the road. Lucky they hadn't met any traffic at that point.

Haven't seen an old Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser in some time. She's a beaut. From both photos, is clearly tied down to the trailer frame at the rear axle just to the left of the pumpkin. Chain or strap, its very clearly there. U-Haul rental trailers have chains in the same place, front and back. Neither photo shows the front axle, so can't tell about the front, but the rear is clearly tied down...both photos. I don't see a problem from the photos. That is a good lookin FJ though, and I'm not even a Toyota man.

i imagine since both the truck and trailer are rentals that this is a case of having to make do untill you can get better the toyota is attached to the trailer just not properly, these trailers are usualy supplied with tie down webs which fit over the tires and ratchet down tothe trailer the rental company asumes that everybody drives a compact car with factory wheels, and those webs will not even come close to fitting the toyotas big tires , i doubt it will come off front or back if he takes it easy but if he's smart he'll stop and buy some proper tie down equipment to protectnot only other drivers but the obviously substancial investment he has made in the toyota here, a fj this nice is worth big dollars today

Jon, the smart car vid, had that happen to me on I94 about 10 miles west of St Cloud MN in a snow storm except it was 2 cars following each other. The 2nd one missed me by about 6 inches.

seen a guy haul like a 1996 mustang out of a car show on a trailer and only thing holding it down was a 2 in wide rachet strap going through the doors with the doors closed on it....

On June 8th the county sold some stuff. One was a 4 wheeler that was totally wrecked. I asked the guy if it fell off a trailer and he said Yes. The engine still ran good, but that was all.

Jon,

Can you give a rundown on what to look for in a good dash cam? Brands/models that you think are a good deal? Where to buy?
Thanks

(quoted from post at 19:39:42 06/18/13) Video is from dash cam
