Buzz words in Ads

"Rare" has already been discussed several times so I'll let it be, but I usually search the photo ads here and my local CL Farm&Garden at least every couple days...the newest one I have noticed is "it's worth more than that in in parts." Doesn't that just scream "I know I'm asking too much so I'm on the defensive already?"
The other one is "if it doesn't sell by (you fill in the date) it goes to scrap!" Like there are a bunch of us with pockets full of money sitting around waiting to overpay to save some poor tractor/implement from goin to scrap? Local guy has 3 straight H Farmalls that range in condition from real bad to worse...started out asking $1200 apiece. once he finally got down to "best reasonable offer" I called, (They had been gonna go to scrp "tomorrow" if not sold for about 3 weeks now.) I suggested $350 each and he asked if I was scrapping them, I said no my intent was to see if I could piece together 1 or maybe two out of the 3 along with some other parts I have around. His answer was "well they are worth $900 each for scrap, and if you aren't scrapping them they should be worth more than that." I said "actually they are worth between $450 and $600 each for scrap, and that is if they are sitting on the scales at the scrap yard, obviouosly you don't have the means to haul them or they would have been scrapped, even if I were going to scrap them it costs money for each trip to your house from mine then to the scrap yard, so paying you more than scrap value is a loser to me." I thanked him for his time and told him if he changed his mind the offer stood and please give me a call. His answer? "I'd rather scrap them then sell them for that price!" LOL

A buzz word that drives me nuts here is "heavy duty". People advertise everything as heavy duty. You have a regular half ton? They call it heavy duty. Have a light sheet metal version of something? They call it heavy duty.

Re the scrapping, I have a few late model vehicles in the yard for sale. When I put one of them up for sale it ran perfectly was less than 10 years old, no rust, new battery, needed suspension work on one side in front. Low miles, new tires and and extra set of rims. All I got was scrappers saying they'd give 0-100$ and only if the car was complete. I couldn't keep the battery or new tires. Couldn't pull the engine etc. I took the 300$ of tires and 75$ battery out, I'll probably grab the fuel pump and engine and take the body in to crush myself and get the 50$ myself.

Well....having parked a tractor out by the road for just two days before I got sick of "Pawn Star" wannabees and putting it back in the barn,I can tell you, just the thought of TRYING to sell something puts me on the defensive. Since all these shows came on TV,WAY too many people are just plain A-Holes. I called Worthington Salvage to see what they'd give me for it. If they'd have offered more,I WOULD have hauled it to them and gladly seen it parted out before some of these jackwagons would have gotten their hands on it.

It staying in the barn. If somebody wants it through word of mouth,I'd sell it. If not,it'll sit there til the tires rot off.

Sounds to me like the people using these "buzz words" aren't jerks, they're experienced sellers and tired of DEALING with jerks.

Ads that say "I know what it is worth.". Usually means they are way over priced and the scrap guy wouldn't take it.

I have had to explain the scrap thing to the know nothings. When they say they have called and know what iron is worth, say $275 a ton. I then say that is for clean cast or clean heavy melt. Your truck, car, tractor, etc, is considered mixed iron and is worth about $150 a ton. That being said, it also does not weigh nearly what you think it does. The GVW tag is not the vehicles' weight.

Not only the buzzwords but the a-hole sellers that fly off the handle and run you off the property, calling you a "pawn star wannabe" for daring to offer even $1 less than the asking price!

It's called haggling, and it's how the prices of things are determined, even the things you pay a "fixed" price for at Walmart. All those things are made from raw materials called commodities, and commodity prices are determined through haggling.

You can't fault a guy for taking a chance either. There's no way to know if the seller will take less unless you offer less. If you don't ask and he would've taken less, you're out $$$.

The point is not to insult the seller, because that's counterproductive to the transaction. Haggling is not personal, but so many people take it personally. Probably stems from an emotional attachment to what they're trying to sell... Maybe if you love it so much you shouldn't be selling it in the first place.

How about "I know what it is worth"... screams I don't know what it is and am going to ask 4-10 times what I think it might be worth...

I always liked "It's all there". Is that the best they can say about it? To me it says "This piece of dogpoop is really wore out".

Or, "It's all been gone through". Translation - "The only thing I'd really like to go through is your wallet."

Ya,you stand here and deal with some a-hole who wants to know if they can make payments,or they don't want it for themselves, but they think they know where they can trade it for something that they do want. And won't I help them out and take less, because if they pay what I want, then trade it off, they aren't saving much. Or the jackwagon who doesn't even have a clue about the model, much less what they're really talking about, trying to tell me everything about something I've had for over 30 years and know every little thing that's wrong with it and have figured in to the price. Just don't get all pizzed and defensive when I say I won't take any less. It ain't gonna get you a deal.

I'm not the only one who doesn't like to even try to sell anything anymore since all these TV shows came out. Looks like the agrivation among sellers is showing up on CL don't it?

Must have been a one of a kind model. But why then would they slap that big old "B" on the side of the hood. Also what on earth is RESTORABLY? Never heard of that word. I guess there is a reason they call MO the show me state!
