Anybody know what this is or how it works? The owner knew nothing about it.

It is a step up or step down gear selector it is not M&W or Hiesler outfits That I know of there were other companys that made them but I don't remember who they were.Push your clutch pedal out and carefully operate shifter and go from there.I have M&W nine speed in my 1951 M that dad bought in 1963.They give you speeds between fourth and fifth good pulling loaded wagons down the road etc.Possibilty Sherman Co. might have built it.Others may chime in that have seen that unit.Scott

Wardner knows for sure. I believe it is a single speed faster than 4th but slower than 5th for rotary hoe operation. That is what I remember from Wardner's description.

Try putting the regular gear shifter in neutral and shift the box in gear. Should have a speed faster than 4th.

Cowman,
I believe it is a rotary hoe gearbox. It provides a gear speed between 4th and 5th. I have one on my H, and have only seen two others with yours being the third (all on Ms). One sold on Ebay for just under $700 about 5 years ago and the other sold for about $300 about 2 years ago, but looked like it had been through a fire. I did a little research on it a few years back, and I think it was manufactured by Howard. I can't prove this, however. To operate, push clutch in, put transmission in neutral, engage gearbox, release clutch. If you would like, I have some pics of the internals of mine I will post when I find them.
