It's dead in the driveway. Out of gas at the engine with 25 gallons in the tank. Are they noted for fuel pump failures, or (please God) just FP relay failure? It did light up the service engine soon light.
Don't know if it is critical but I did BACK it down 150 yard driveway on a hill and it died at the bottom
I did pop the gas cap and did not hear escaping fuel vapor.
Don't have a way to check thrown codes.

Likely to be the pump. Sometimes you can get them going again by thumping the bottom of the tank with a rubber mallet.

Pump is in fuel tank. Most GMs have a wire hanging out of a harness under the hood, I think it is orange, that you can put 12 volts to and make the pump run, bypassing the FP relay. I have seen some where the fuel pump will run, but not put out enough pressure. A friend has a 1996 k1500 that is on its sixth pump. It has around 120,000 miles on it.

There are many on here with vast knowledge of these vehicles and I am sure they will reply. I just learn as I go. Still partial to GM, especially the older ones.

Also, fuel pressure testers, just a gauge, hose and fitting are around $25, I bought one at O'reilly's to check my son's S-10. It was a failed pump.

New fuel filter 3000 miles ago. A friend laid under the tank and could hear the pump running.

Yeah, I read in the repair manual that third thing to check was fuel pressure at the line fitting.
How difficult is it for one inexperienced tank mech to drop that tank? I've completely disassembled 55-57 Chevys from the body down but I'm a little worried on this. Plus that tand is now almost full. I added 3 gals of fresh treated gas.

If you can hear the pump running but fuel is not reaching the engine it could be a Pass Lock issue. Turn the key to run position, leave it sit for at least 10 minutes, turn off, and then try to start. The security light is supposed to flash when the system is active, but I have worked on several that didn't.

Dad replaced his pump in his 1988 Chevy, and also in my 96 Chevy truck. Both, fortunately, had only half a tank of fuel in them at the time. Both times he would loosen the tank and lower it on 2 rolling jacks, then he would lift the truck over the tank. This way he could roll the tank out, replace the pump, then roll it back under, without draining the tank! My 96 took less than a half day!

Had the pump go out on my pickup, so I went and bought a new one. Put it in and would not start. Bad pump from the store. Glad I tried it before I put the box on. If you get it running by thumping on the bottom of the tank make sure you park it where it is going to be fixed. Usually only works once.

Assuming this is an old body style truck(GMT400), they are very noted for weak fuel pumps. The newer trucks aren"t a whole lot better. On the '99 it will be much more expensive than the '96 and early '97. Buy a new relay either way.
Listen for the pump while a helper turns on the key. Should only come on for about 3-4 seconds. If it doesn't come on, put the new relay in and try again.
Do a pressure test. MINIMUM is 58 psi. Any less and the pump needs to be repalced. Replace only with a Delphi or ACDelco brand pump. The schrader valve is just right (looking at engine) of the centre of the engine, below the Vortec box. On these trucks the electrical connector should be part of the pump assembly, unlike '96 and '97, but if not check for an updated connector, and check for an update to the truck side connector either way.
Replace the fuel filter when replacing the pump, it's required for warranty. Replace the in-tank sock if it's not inlcuded with the pump assembly.

That is where the fuel filter will be, but if you bump the tank, right square in the middle of it, sometimes you can get it to start. If it does start, drive it until its about out of gas, or until you find a "friend" that will drop the tank for you. I don't mind changing the pumps, but I have a 4 post hoist in my shop, a 100 gallon tank I can siphon the gas into, and a 12 volt pump to pump it back.

Ive got a 99 'classic 1500' (old body style like 98) with almost 300K on it. needless to say ive replaced about 4 pumps in it, and i have to do it again, they are notorious for going out. Tahoe will have to have the tank dropped. pickups are easier, i just undo the tailight harness, take the 6 boltsou t and slide the bed back about a foot. pump is right there behind the cab. easy removal

as noted by otheres, replace everything when yo do it. fuel tank sock, and in line filter.

I called Larry's I-90 repair at 0745/ Rollback is on the way. I ride into town with it and get a loaner. I've got corn to get in, hay to put up and will just turn this over to the experts. Took notes on all the advice and will drive the mech nuts telling him how to fix it, LOL
