I need to upgrade my puter, question is will new (windows 8) or what ever it is accept older disc's and programs? Most run on windows xp?

You'll get more reliable answers by going to the company support websites for the different programs you need to run. Going from Windows XP, chances are good you'll need to upgrade your software.

I'm not sure what you mean by "older disks". Do you mean CDs/DVDs? The disk format hasn't changed, but whether or not data you've backed up on them is compatible with newer software is another question.

there is supposed to be a program in 7 and 8 that allows older software to be run...i haven't had a need to look for it or try it.

IF you are going to windows 8 be prepared for a long learning curve. Not like anything you have ever experienced. Not saying it is bad just takes time to learn. Would I do it again 50/50 still learning ever day.

Short answer, unfortunately, is "maybe".
My laptop is 6 years old, originally came with Windows Vista on it.
It now runs Windows 8, and does it flawlessly.
Windows 8 is fast, stable and reliable as far as I can tell.
It just looks different and is hard to navigate compared to what
we are used to working with from XP or Windows 7.
Whether or not it will run your discs and programs depends on what
those discs and programs are. If they're discs of saved pictures or
documents I wouldn't have any fear.
If you're going to go to Win8, I recommend that you register it.
Windows 8.1 (code named "Blue") is due out soon and is supposed
to be free to registered Windows 8 owners.
8.1 may put back the familiar Start button and menus, at least as
an option. (no guarantee on that though)

My wife's computer quit. Mother board failure. We got her a new one, and re-installed Quicken on it. Entered all the farm tickets as usual, but at tax time, I found that you couldn't print out reports without upgrading to a newer version of Quicken. Luckily this old dinosaur was still working with XP, and I was able to transfer everything to it. If you use Quicken for record keeping, you "may" have trouble getting reports printed. Smarter minds here can tell you for sure.

You can purchase a computer on line with Windows 7 installed. If you get Windows 7 Pro it comes with Virtual XP that will run inside Win 7. I am running one program that way. I put a link to one of the computers I ordered for your information.
This computer also comes with a Windows 8 Disk.

Hey Jocco.

Windows 8 is designed for a touch screen tablet.

It is cumbersome to use with a mouse and a memory hog.

If you have a machine with XP you may just want to add memory and keep it. That is the quickest way to make your computer run faster.

Good luck,

Brad
