Planter Parts

Ok. We have a New Idea 4 row planter. Model 7200. Baiscally the same as a John Deere 7000. It has JD bolts in it. Picture a white/gray JD 7000 planter.

Now, questions. Our planter is set up per the manual as a "no till planter" We are (due to wet spring) considering no tilling our corn this year. It will be planted into hay ground. We are chopping/baling the hay off first, spraying...and either disking it up or no tilling.

Thinking real hard on the no till, due to time. What cover wheels and openers are best for this? Brand and model would be greatly appreciated. Need to order parts ASAP!

Not offering advice on the questions you asked,but those New Idea planyers were Whites. Unless they sold some Deeres as New Ideas at another time.

Well.....that new idea planter has JD bolts in it, and the seed meters will exchange with a JD. We used to have a JD, thats when i noticed the similarities.

I think the new idea was actually a kinze. But the old kinze's were nothing more that a blue JD.

Don't know. I just know from reading the history of White in Oliver Heritage that White built the New Idea planters. It was written over several issues with one entire article on the White/New Idea years. There had been a merger and they wanted both White and existing New Idea dealers to have a full line of equipment,so they painted some Whites in New Idea colors and sold them through the New Idea dealers.

That's all I know about it. Never knew they sold Deeres as New Ideas,but you learn something new every day I guess. I just know Agco owns the White planter line and the New Idea line now.

Anyway,with all that said,my AC 333 NoTil Special doesn't have much of anything all that special as far as the row units are concerned. Just the notil coulters ahead of the disc openers,then there's about a 4 inch spring loaded wheel right behind the opener to push the seed down in the seed furrow then the press wheel. The press wheel on it is just an 18 inch regular press wheel with a single rib rubber band type tire. That and the down pressure springs on the units.

How many down pressure springs on each unti and what diameter are they. The no til "conservation" planters had two springs each unit and they were about 1 3/4 in diameter. Standard 7000 had two litle3/4 inch springs. lots of wholesalers sell those hd springs. Make sure your opener discs are no less than 14.5 inches OD. I have the Kinze trash whippers out front of mine. Have a spare set of the steel furrow openers that run ahead of the discs if you are interested in those.

Our has (I believe) 4 down pressure springs. I will check tonight. there is opener for dry fertilizer ,then a coulter, and seed opener followed by a set of press wheels.

My question is what should we look at as far as spike tooth closing wheels, or openers/trash cleaners.

If it's the Kinze unit that looks like the Deere 7000 series, your closing wheels and furrow openers should work just fine. Pay attention to your depthe control- about 2". As far as the no-til feature, that's the work of the no-til coulters on the front of the unit. Some are unit mounted, and some are frame mounted. Most of the Kinze units have a Yetter no-til coulter, which is slightly different than the Deere coulter- the bolt holes are different by about 1/16" and will not accept the JD no-til coulter, even though they look the same. The NI-Kinze I had was also maxed out at about 28,000 population if I remember right.

I run a 7000 no-till. What you propose is the hardest no-til. A 7000 will do it but there are problems. In sod the grass roots will bind the soil up so there is little dirt to cover the seed. The slot will not close well. I have Martin spaded closing wheels with drag chains and they work so-so in sod. I would disk for sure, you need a little loose dirt to cover the seed.

I would not worry about till/no till on hay ground. Just burn it down with round up and go.

Agree that Kinze made the New Idea planters. Saw them sitting there years ago on a factory tour. The early Kinze's did look alot like a Deere 7000. The planting units were exactly the same.
