How to get a tractor across the Canada border?

I'm looking at a tractor just across the Canadian border. What do I need to bring this across the border. I would be hauling it on my own pickup truck and trailer. Thanks in advance.

You might want to drive it through customs, you probably can't legally haul it in Canada. At least that is how my Brother-in-law did it with a large piece of logging equipment. A Rottne Forwarder, on rubber tires.

Friend of mine has brought dozens across the border- both ways. Often brings up tricycles, brings back wheatlands. Make sure they are washed clean, and have bill of sale.

I sold one to a guy in canada. He washed it and wanted a receipt with the serial number on it and said that was enough to get him across the border. He hauled it with his pickup and trailer. Good Luck, John

Best to log onto the Canada Border Services Agency web site and work your way down to the Importing link.

I'd follow that up with a telephone call to speak to a Human Bean as well

First make sure YOU can get into Canada - you might be surprised how easily people are turned away. Any kind of record might keep you out.

Unless they've loosened their rules - I don't know. But about 10 years ago my brother and some buddies went up to do some hunting.

Got to the border and they wouldn't let one of the guys in because he had a dui on his record.

He had to rent a car and make the 8 hour ride back, and take the loss on his pre-paid lodging and licenses.

JR you are right on that advice. Make sure you have been a good law abiding citizen in the past or you won't be allowed across. They have access to every hiccup you have made in life. I used to cross the border several times a year on the harvest and have witnessed it. One time was one of our crew members who had two dui's that we didn't know about. We sat there with our trucks blocking the highway for three hours while they were investigating him. The second time was a hunting party that was having trouble with customs while we were in there getting our paperwork done. Two in the hunting party had dui's and had to find their own way back home. The rest of the guys were so upset they were about to carry those two characters out the door. Jim

Thanks for the advice guys. The tractor doesn't run so I can't drive it across. Does anyone know what I need to drive my truck and trailer across. Any special licsence or fees? I know I will need a passport right?

I don't think you'll need any special license, or at least I never did. Check with your insurance company just to be safe about coverage. They might want to know some dates but probably not. At the border they aren't the DOT enforcing highway laws. What they are after is to make sure nothing stolen and no people of bad reputation gets in their country. They are also concerned about you as a US citizen doing commercial business in Canada if you're driving A pickup pulling a trailer. I don't know what they will say about a toolbox full of tools or the chains or straps in the back of your pickup. It might just be considered luggage. We had to pay a duty on the tools in the tool trailer when we came through with the combines but we were commercial, so that might make a difference.

The boss and I went across into Canada driving a pickup with the farm name on it one March day ten years ago. We were going into Canada just for a social visit with a customer, but they saw the farm name on the pickup and pretty soon we were in the back room being questioned. He was coming at us from all kinds of angles but we were polite and friendly and stood our grounds that we were just there for a social visit and that there was nothing commercial about it. They finally let us through without ever glancing in the pickup. Just be sure you have the name of the person you are dealing with in Canada and where he lives. They'll want to know when you plan to be leaving Canada so it's good to have all that information in your head before you hit the crossing. Yes, you will need a passport. Wish I could go with you. Haven't been up there for five years or so. Jim

I have brought 3 across the border with absolutely no problem....one was even full of mud, as well as my truck and trailer. Mine were all made in the USA, which I heard helps (they asked). If not, I guess they can collect tax (import tariff) on it??

Don't know what the regs are now, but in the 60's it was a $5 broker's fee to move farm equipment across the border either way.

If you have a dui on your record they probably won't let you accross unless it is an old one and then they have a process where you can get a dispensation but it takes a long time and a few hundred dollars. Just do a internet search and it will direct you on how to get it done. The Canadians consider a dui a serious offence. Prison time if caught.

Pass port, bill of sale with serial number and good to go. Some crossings want the tractor pressure washed with no dirt. No duty, I bought one last fall and filled out some paper work at the border and that was it. I also bought it for myself and not resale. Very simple. Gordy
