Anybody ever change out an AC clutch. My daughters went bad in her 03 Durango and rather than changing the whole compressor and having to do the recharge, I am thinking of just putting a new clutch on it. They are available so they must get changed.

I tried to do one on a Dakota of that era many years back. I ended up changing the pump. Don't remember why???

Have done it both ways. Both work well. If in doubt call local parts store and see if they have both go and see what is involved as some are easier than others. Even if they don"t have one or the other they will usually order to stock so you can see.

Depends on what the real problem is and the type of clutch. Some clutches have a rubber center that breaks; pretty easy to replace that. Others clutches are more complicated. But then, there might be a problem with the compressor that caused the clutch to fail (maybe it seized up?). Check it out as best you can before you start buying parts.

I had that experience with an 88 Caravan. Burned up the original compressor clutch and two more I replaced. I finally found that the compressor pulled so hard that any time high side pressure exceeded 230 psi, it would slip and burn the clutch. To my dismay, I found my replacement compressor with a new clutch, cost little more than the two new clutches I burned up on that old failing compressor. :(

Only way to get a clutch for a Dodge is from Dodge. Very little aftermarket support for just the clutch. Dodge clutch pieces cost as much as a whole aftermarket compressor.
