Got any pics of old gas pumps?

If you have an antique gas pump - either in use or for yard/shop art - would be fun to see pics.

We'd like to get one someday, they are just a little bit pricey. I do see a nice rusty one in our future though... someday.

I don't have any pics, just a story. When I was a kid I would help fuel up the smaller tractors or pickup at Grandpas. I got to work the pump to pump the glass globe full of gasoline. I always thought that was the neatest thing. The pump is now at dads awaiting some sort of fate.

I love them also, but yessssssssss they are expensive. Heres all the pictures and for sales you need for a while lol Copy and paste into your browser.

John T,
Thanks, I had googled them too. Amazing variety. Was just wondering if any here have them. I think one would look really nice out by our shop (preferably pure rust - but really well worn paint would be acceptable).

Forgot to post a pic of a clock-face one we saw at the Le Sueur swap... here it is. Wanted $800 for it - so just snapped a photo.

Greg K.,

I did not know that the glass globes actually filled up with gas. I always figured they were just ornamental. Will have to look on wikipedia for more info.

Edit: Forgot to say, neat memory. Also hope that maybe you or someone in your family ends up with the old pump someday.

Here is a place called "Gas pump Heaven". They make parts for the old pumps plus old oil cans too.

The old gas pumps with the tall glass cylinders actually measured the gas in the glass cylinder. You pumped the gas up into the cylinder and then gravity filled the car/truck with the hose.

The ones with the globes do not fill with gas .The earlier one with the cylindrical glass filled with gas. It has rods surrounding the glass. The globes were holding advertising glass for the brand name. The name of the shows is Petroliana show. All the original stuff is way expensive. Search Petroliana in google images.

I got this 19 years ago and keep gas in it for using around house. I have the hardware cloth around the glass cylinder to protect it from possible hail storm.

drsportster,
Thanks. I will have to do some searching to see if I can find a little reading material to learn more about them.

Family gas station ~1927. Globes removed from pumps & mounted to building due to height problem. Still have one pump & it was still being used up until about 1965.
