I'm never amazed.

I'm 55 years old. After I turned 13 I could have coffee with my dad at breakfast time.It was made in a percolator on the stove.Hot,thick, rich, and black.
Move ahead 42 years. My wife and I go to a mall in St. Louis county last week.Walked out of Cabelas into the mall and here's a STARBUCKS. Evidently the girl waiting on me was new.Ask what I wanted I says a large coffee.A blank stair comes on her face. You don't want anything in it.I said no.She says how can you stand the taste.
I gave $3.00 and just shock my head.I miss the old days.

And the sad thing is, most of the espresso stands don't make as good a cup of black coffee as your average restaurant.

Several years ago, a friend and I were rehabbing a foreclosure house. Every weekend for about 6 months. Before we started, we'd go get coffee to go: He at an espresso stand, latte, 3 bucks; me at the hamburger stand next to it, black coffee, better than the espresso place could make, 75 cents.

Oh, and the real estate crash came before we finished. We were lucky to get out with our skins intact.

You can have all the coffee you want and my share also. LOL. If it drink the stuff I could well end up in the hospital yep I am allergic to coffee

The so called experts say that percolating is the worst way to make coffee. They don't have a clue. coffee from a percolater is the best as far as I'm concerned.

Just finished up a coffee from the gas station, Holiday. Cold
enough to really appreciate a hot cup today!

I'm going to question myself on preferring the open station
tractor for planting if this keeps up. If, then, we can ever get in
the field.

Had a brat at the grocery store brat stand. Said unlike most
years, I bet you are fighting over who gets to stand over the
grill today. They laughed. And agreed. A van in the lot had
several inches of snow on top of it. Still coming down east of
me I guess. Ours mostly melted from yesterday.

Up near 45 degrees now, but overcast, drop of rain tries to fall,
and there is a stiff wind out of the north that feels much colder
than 45...

Irony was I was in town picking up a new lawn mower.
Shoulda maybe gone for a snow blower attachment yet.....

I only drink coffee over the winter months. Sure still tastes
good here in early May this year!

I know its getting harder and harder to find just a plain cup of coffee. I dont care for any of the flavored coffee's. Your right I miss the old days when you could go down the local gas station and stand around and drink a cup!

You would LOVE European coffee. I don't know how they do it, but it's strong and good flavored. In Amsterdam I ordered a coffee at the airport and it came in a little dinky cup with coffee that had as much strength as three American cups. I haven't been able to make coffee that good yet, but I'm still trying. Closest I've come is to stick the cup under our Bunn and catch the first coffee to come out, using twice as many grounds as is recommended. Jim

I drank coffee as a kid but as I got older it got to the point I could no longer drink it. My mom is also allergic to coffee so it is a family thing I guess. If I drink it my body temp sky rocks.
As for snow none that I could see but we have had some sleet and very cold rain pretty much all day

My Grandmother made Coffee made in a White porcelain Percolator pot with a egg on top of the coffee grounds. Good stuff...

Old guy who owned local diner in '50s had a rep for the best coffee around as per truckers, farmers, and even train crews who would come there for it. Used freshly ground coffee, pat of butter, salt, and a couple of clean crushed eggshells. Perc'd about 6 gal. at a time, usually reloaded several times a day, especially in winter. 10 cents a cup with several refills/50cents for a thermos. Good to the last drop!!

My mother (of Norwegian descent) always said "IF you aren't man enough to drink it black, leave it alone". She implied that it was "those spineless Swedes" that put cream and sugar in good coffee. We didn't have to be "politically correct" in those days. LOL

I always loved my mother-in-law's coffee. Couldn't drink it but I would bring it home to patch the driveway.

I grew up in a house where both my parents drank coffee with chicory. The stronger the better so I really never acquired a taste for it.

If you really like some strong old fashion coffee you need to try some from New Orleans.
The famous Cafe Du Monde serves coffee and chicory. It is traditionally served Au Lait (mixed half and half with hot milk) to tourist. That should give you a idea of how strong it is.

Never had a cup of coffee. I tasted it once and no way I would touch it again. My mother was from London, so I grew up on hot tea. I drink about 3 cups every morning. I have had enough tea to float a battleship. I look forward to it every morning.

I like strong black coffee, but my blood pressure doesn"t handle the caffeine very well, so I have to settle for decaf. It usually isn"t TOO bad as long as the pot is freshly made.

The young waitress at my normal Saturday breakfast meeting place finally just had to ask. "Do you drink this because you like the taste??" I replied, "No, I drink it because every time I get caffeine, I start hearing the voices again and my doctors say I might try to stab somebody again!"

After that, I noticed she ALWAYS makes sure there is a fresh pot of decaf brewing just for me! It sure is nice to be appreciated.

On another note...Our old neighbor, who died at
104, said he tried BEER, as a young man..and found
that he liked it so much, that he knew he should always stay away from it..and never drank again !

Black coffee, no way, don't care for it at all. Tea I like black but not coffee. I'll drink one cup (a big one with milk) of coffee a day. Plain old instant crystals out of a jar and its about the best tasting coffee I've ever had.
Perked and brewed coffee smells good but the taste never quite measures up for me so I'll stick with instant.

I drink coffee but not black.
However I knew 2 army sergeants who lived off the
darkest strongest coffee I've ever seen.
During one field exercise they actually drank half
the pot, filled it back to the top with water and
poured the already made coffee into the back of
the machine to run it through MORE coffee grounds!

On another field exercise we forgot the coffee
maker but had coffee grounds. The boilers in one
of the buildings heated the water enough to make
the coffee if we could find a way to pour it
through the grounds... The top of a Gatorade
bottle was cut off flipped over in the lower piece
and behold our peculator was ready

One thing to check is if these espresso bars are making you Americano style coffee (espresso diluted with hot water) instead of regular drip coffee.

I am only 32 but I can relate. I walk into a Starbucks last week for the first and only time.
Me: Can I get a large black coffee?
Barista: You mean "vente"?
Me: No, I mean LARGE
Barista: What flavor?
Me: Coffee flavor
Barista getting annoyed: Well what does that mean?
Me also getting annoyed: It means I want a coffee that tastes like coffee.

So after like five minutes and like $7.00 I get the worst tasting cup of tar I have ever tasted..... WTF I will stick to my Maxwell House.

Glad I never developed the coffee habit! I think I'm
up to two cups this year, and I'm about a cup over
my average for the first 5 months of a year....

Popper, I read our thread kind of late so now I'm way down in the bottom, but my Danish immigrant granddad made the strongest coffee. The smell of it perking permeated the house. I have just a twitch of Norski in me too. Maybe that's why I like it strong and black. LOL Jim
