Yo Rich, you post a lot of good firearm info, heres what my son has, I'm NOT familiar with them but sure looked like it packed a punch from the size of the barrell!!!

He flew in from California and was sittin back when his jeans were raised up a bit and I see an ankle holster. He shows it to me (carefully) and says its a Sig Sauer (Spelling???) 40 Caliber with a bullett in the chamber. Im NOT familiar with those, can you tell me if its a good one for personal protection!!!!!

When my son (taught them to hunt, use firearms safe and responsible and fish etc) was in grade school here in Southern Indiana, at school the Principal has a firearm safety education day and they actually fire a shotgun the principal brought. I sorta bet they dont do that in New York City ???

Take care Rich

Sorry for double post, the one below was refused (I thought?) so I changed a few words n tried agian and then it took?????

I'm not Old (well, I am, but you know what I mean...) but yes SIG-Sauer is top of the line. Special Forces operators carry them, Gummint issues them as the M11.

Thanks, I have a 9 MM handgun but was thinking of a couple new handguns for the first wife and I to carry for personal protection as we travel across the good ol USA in the Motorhome. I was considering revolvers (dependability when really needed), the Sig Sauer sounds like more then we need but glad the son has a good weapon.

Hard to beat a J-frame S&W in that category. Load it up with +P if you're concerned about the effectiveness of .38Spl.

K-frame Smith is next size bigger, will chamber the .357 round, also a good choice IMHO.

John, does this refusal to post based on some words apply to everyone or just some select few. I have experienced the same due to certain wording.

After I thought of it I dont think the word gun is what caused my error message, because see it did get posted. But it said something like access rufused so I re posted but then there were BOTH posts?? darn if I understand

If you are shopping for a new revolver for a carry gun, take a look at the Ruger LCR in .38+P, .357, or even an 8 shot 22LR or 22Mag. They are really sweet, light, and have a very smooth trigger pull.

Best carry pistol IMHO is the Kel-Tec .380. Plenty of punch for short range, and only weighs 7 ounces. You can carry it in a jacket pocket and it isn't obvious that you're carrying.

Went with daughter to look at a couple pickups from private parties- she said the more expensive one was 5 grand, how should she handle the payment? "Take as many hundreds as you're willing to spend." She took 50 hundreds and I took my pistol, just for fun, because you never know what you'll run into. Didn't tell her about that until we got home. Showed it to her- first reaction- "Is that real?" (Its part composite material). After assuring her it was and showing her the ammo, second reaction was "I know what I want for Christmas."

Needn't have worried- seller was a retired school administrator, she's a teacher, they had a good discussion. But you just never know.

Got to agree about the Kel-Tec .380. Anything in your pocket is lots better than a stone and its so small you'll keep it with you.

I have a Ruger LCP .380, which is almost identical to the Kel-Tec. Light and small, but a lot of comfort.

(quoted from post at 06:09:45 05/05/13) Crossing the USA with a handgun will get you locked up.My Maine CCW is NG in Mass.

Could you clarify that?? There are federal transport laws to allow interstate travel. Or are you saying you can't carry it on your person?

There's is supposed to be a "Firearms Owners Protection Act" that allows interstate travel with your gun where you're going from one state where it's legal to have it to another where it's legal to have it. It's not well known and, IMO, is not enforced at the Federal Level at all. I believe it was enacted in the early 90's. I never heard about it till around 2007 and still rarely hear of it.

An out of stater carrying a gun of any kind in Mass is dead meat. An out of stater carrying a handgun in NY is the same. And now with Cuomos unSAFE act...just stay away from NY. Wish I could.

The Sigs I have seen would be pretty large to be comfortably worn in an ankle holster. And a pistol that large would be hard to conceal in an ankle holster and would be very obvious to anyone who looked. When I used an ankle holster years ago, it carried a little S&W Chief"s Special .38 revolver.

On the other hand, the Sig Sauer pistols I have fired were all very high quality guns, and really nice. I like the .40 cal, as it has quite a bit better stopping power than the 9mm.

Is your son a Cop? In any case, he should do his homework on the local concealed carry laws to make sure he is in compliance. Although most likely the fact that he is packing would never become known to anyone, in some areas having a concealed or for that matter unconcealed firearm will get a person in a whole lot of trouble if they come in contact with law enforcement. I mean guns drawn, down on the ground commands and maybe even being booked into jail.

I sometimes used the ankle holstered revolver as my off-duty gun, and tried it as a backup gun when I was in uniform. But I found that having a holstered revolver on my ankle made it tough for me to run very far, which occasionally I had to do on patrol. So my backup weapon was usually in a pocket or an inside the waistband holster.

In retirement, I seldom carry a weapon anymore. But I also don"t go some places where I think I might possibly NEED a weapon. So far, so good.

Good luck to you and to your son!

Same here. 20+ years packing a belt full of stuff around 8-15 hours a day, the last thing I want is to go back to that. I see the mall ninjas drooling over the latest and greatest gee whiz tactical crap and just shake my head. Give me my Smith Bodyguard or Charter 44 in a pocket and I'm good to go.

You can transport the gun, but once in a state where your permit is no good, you basically can't touch the gun or you become an instant felon.

You've got to have a (non-resident) concealed carry permit for every state you plan on traveling in with your handgun, or one that the particular state recognizes. Some states do not recognize any other states' CCP.
