Delivering feed on May 2, Preston Mn. (Pic)

Well I have seen snow in May before but not this much this far south. The fellow I delivered the feed to told me he has zero field work done and no manure hauled. He says his ground is way too wet and that was before this last rain/snow mess. He had a good eight inches where he was at.

The main roads where just wet as the snow was melting as it fell. The secondary roads where snow covered and as they got to the less traveled ones the snow was sticking worse. This snow was real wet and slushy. You run over it and it turned to ice/water mix. Real slick to drive on. I made it in his road fine loaded but he had to pull me out the road empty. Truck would just set there and spin.

Another fun day in rural America!!!

Those pics are , for me, almost unreal. While I do belive you,it is just so hard for me to imagin, compared to what we are having. Yesterday was beautiful, warm and sunny, around 75F. Rode on an open tractor all day, and made some progress toward getting ground ready to finaly plant grain. Sure hope that things warm up , and stay that way for you. Bruce

We had an absolutely great day here yesterday. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, and about 70 or so. I should start planting in the next day or so. BFO neighbor probably has over a thousand acres in this week. I finished manure Wednesday, and have started spraying. No rain until Tuesday. Still cool for this time of the year, though. At least, the pastures are starting to look good. Might be a really good year this year here in N.Md. Hope things warm up quick for you, Jim...

When I had my truck I rarely went to work when it was snowing. It seemed like it would go anywhere with a load on but had to get towed many times after dumping.

Yesterday a local feed mill had 9 trucks stuck in the muck or snow or whatever. One of them was my son's. They weren't all stuck at the same time, but the truck manager was busy. Jim

I live near Decorah Iowa not too far from Preston. We got just a trace of snow but yes hardley any planting or manure done around here. Last year we were all done by this time.

I've never seen chains on a feed truck or livestock truck in these parts. Usually a farmer nearby has a large tractor handy. If a loaded truck is mired in mud I doubt of chains will get him out. Seems like a good way to twist a drive shaft. The feed hauling business is short haul so they can choose to stay at the mill if conditions get bad enough to be dangerous but springtime mud conditions can pose a problem, especially at new hog sites that haven't settled yet. The livestock has to eat so the trucks can't sit around too long.

My son's truck was empty when he was pulled out. He said it would have made a good Dodge Cummins commercial cause the guy who pulled him out did it with a new Dodge Cummins. LOL The pickup's wheels were making rooster tails and the pickup was jumping and weaving but it did the job. Jim

I live about 6 miles from Preston. Who do you deliver feed to up here? I don"t recognize the roads. I had a bull delivered yesterday from Montana. Guy got off the road turning into my driveway with a big gooseneck with 5 bulls in it. Lots of fun getting him pulled out. I have 3/4 of my oats in and some fertilizer down on corn ground but thats it. Its a winter that just keeps going and going.

The load yesterday went to Rumpus Ridge Dairy on Jack Pine road. It is about 4-5 miles west out 16 then north on Co-11. I also haul to Trail Side Dairy just north of Preston. I also haul over to Brogan Heights Dairy at Saratoga too. We also go to Houston MN once each week to Oak Ridge farms too.

Not in MAY!!! The full set of chains adds 750 LBS to the truck weight. We are loaded on a scale to nothing over 80,000. So carrying the chains losses us .375 ton on every load. Yesterday that would have been $8 less freight pay on the load. So multiply that times three trucks that haul 35-40 loads of fed each week and you are talking about $250-350 dollars lost carrying the chains.

hey j-d, never carried or hung chains on yet, if it's that bad that i can't get there, well i'm not going, to get stuck way out in the sticker patches,,,lol

I live about a mile south of Jerrys in the valley on county 11 in Carimona. My farm is 2 miles to the south of my house.

20 Miles North of Rochester we got over 15 inches Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Another 3/4 inches last night. Just a light rain now. Lots of trees and branches down. I've got a couple of branches down that were over 6 inches in diameter.

Hopefully we will get power back on later Today. There is a broken wire near the meter but since it only services two meters it is down near the bottom of the list to get repaired. They have a lot of poles to replace before they get to us.

Wow. I live in Northern Ontario and it has been 80 three days in a row. There is still some snow banks in corners that don't get sun, but I have never seen all the snow gone here before May 2, and usually later. We are slower starting field work that last year which was really early, but not much behind a normal year. For reference I am 7 hours north of Toronto.

At work there isn't any snow and here at home we still have 3 inches+. It is like living in two different worlds.

The next time I go up to Rumpus Ridge Maybe we can meet up. It is amazing how small a world it is at times.

I agree to a degree. The belt trailer is bad about weight transfer. When you first start unloading all of the weight moves to the back of the truck. Many times I can't get pulled up the first time. So I have to chain up to pull ahead ten feet. Then maybe just take them back off. The trouble is the truck will still be at 60,000 lbs when you need to do that first pull up. Not many tractors will help you much.

I rarely have to chain up other than in the barn yards. It just is cheaper to chain up than have to call a wrecker.
