Rate per acre

Whats the going rate for discing, chisel plowing, and no tilling per acre. I have someone wanting about 70 acres chisel plowed once, disced twice and then wants it notilled in millet.

I agree with going to state custom farming rates, but just to be the devil"s advocate, how can he call it no-til, after three tillage passes?

I will be using a John Deere 750 15foot drill to seed in the millet but he is wanting to no till wheat this fall so I need to give him current prices.

Just to be fair to you and him I would figure how many hours it will take you. Then add fuel costs for those hours. If it were me I would charge $35 per hour + fuel. This would be for each operation. I could be way off on my ideas here, but......The guy is asking you to do it and he likely does not have the machine or time to do it.

Ok. First of all is it one 70 acre field or ten 7 acre fields? Makes a huge difference. Second---it is most fair to everyone if you just charge by the hour because, and those of you who have done it know this, if after you disk it twice you may find soil condition still is not right to seed. Might have to drag it first. Then it might rain for a week so you have to disk it again to kill weeds. Then you may have to roll or pack it after seeding. I tell everyone-and I do a lot of custom work-I will charge you $65/hr. for what ever you want me to do. You want me to disk it once-$65/hr. You want me to disk it twice-$65/hr. You want me to pick up rocks as I go along-$65/hr. You want me to walk across the field to get the trailer with seed-$65/hr. Tell them every time they do something of the process it is saving them $65/hr. Let them call the shots.

I agree with the Flying Belgian, if you build a house, everytime you make a change you get a larger bill.

I agree with flying Belgian except that around here rates are generally a lot higher. I charge different rates according to the power needed to pull the implement so my pass with smaller tractor to pick rocks is at a lower rate but it is at a slower speed so it still costs. and I still get paid for my time. on one job I left my loader tractor for the guy to use for a day picking rocks and charged him that much less than if I were with it.
