Got it off Craigslist, a guy said he would deliver it to the TSC parking lot right off the highway in town. He was going to come next week when he had a few to deliver but I guess he got another order sooner than he had figured. I will use it to hold water over by the pigpen in the summer months and to store sap in the spring. It smells like artificial fruit flavor but I imagine the pigs will tolerate it and I hope the smell will have dissipated by the time I want it for sap next year.

We get an additive for gravel road base in totes like that. They are very handy with a nice ball valve and threaded cap on the top. You don't dare leave them very long or they end up gone from a road improment project.
 
Thank you, I hadn't thought of that. Do you have a recommendation for what kind of paint would stick to plastic like that? If not I can make a cover for it too.

This one has the valve and cap like you describe. I still need to figure out how to hook up a hose to the tank, or maybe just put it up on blocks so I can fill the pig water pan from it.

I use them to store used motor oil for my shop furnace,and catch water from my spouting.A neighbor cut the top out of one and uses it to store shelled corn for his stove.The grain elevators used to give them away to get rid of them,but now they get around 40 bucks selling them for all kind of purposes.
 
I have seen some on craigslist in my area.
From $20 for empty had chemicals all the way up to $100 for very clean food grade.

Lots of people around here get them; cut the top out and put their garbage cans in them by the street. Keeps dogs and coons from dumping over the garbage and scattering it all over the road.

I do not know of any paint that will stick to that smooth plastic but you better cover it cause the sun will eat it up.
Remember when building a stand for it...... It will weigh over a ton full of water.
 
We used one to haul water for the sprayer.

Nice find zach!!! I have a 300 gallon poly tank mounted on an old fuel barrel stand hooked to a down spout to catch rain water. Had algae problems from the sunlight. Bought about. Half a dozen rattle cans of plastic paint (they use it for lawn chairs) from big r store, painted the tank black first then put a coat of white over the top. Black keeps the sun out of the tank, then the white reflects the sun so it doesnt heat the water.
 
Nice! I haven't found food grade ones yet but the place I work at in Jackson makes yard mulch; they buy the dye in totes like that. The dye is biodegradable, so the one they gave me will be fine as a water tank.

They are super handy. I have one on a small trailer that I fill before any major storms when I suspect we,ll have power outage. My small generator is will power our refrigerators and lights but can't handle the well pump. This get us some "flushing water" and water for the animals
 
They are crazy heavy when full! My 3720 can only lift it when about half full, and my little trailer is way sacked out when we tank it up. The aero effect of that thing on the roof must have been something!
 

That tote is the 275 gallon type. That puts it at 2240 lbs. when filled with 275 gallons of water, plus the weight of the empty tote. The 330 gallon type is my favorite. It goes 450 lbs. more when filled with 330 gallons of water, plus the weight of the empty tote. Almost 2800 lbs. Be careful!!!!!
 
My plan is to put the tank in a wagon I have around which is built
on an old pickup rear end. I think it will be strong enough, if not I
will have to think up something else. I could also put it on the
spare hay wagon but I will maybe need that for hay in a couple of
months.

Now that's one big beer can.
Lots of those around here, mostly hauling water.
Have seen them painted, looks like rattle can paint mostly.
Good find.
 
That's a neat way to do it. I have thought that it might come in handy for that kind of thing if I ever needed it.

This one was $75 plus $5 for the seller to bring it about 30 miles. The lowest I have seen here is $50, at least lately. We don't have trash pickup out here so I had not thought about that but I can see it would be handy.

That's a good idea. I have smelled the tank a few more times and am leaning toward artificial cherry flavoring. I wonder if the goats drank water from it if the milk would smell the same way.
