Need some info on hauling a tractor to Fla

Looks like we"re about to make a major change – again. SWMBO has had enough snow so we"re going back south. Anyone know what if anything is required to transport a small tractor into Fla? It'll be a one-way trip.

It"s a Yanmar 1610D – about 20 hp with a loader. Yeah, I know it ain"t American iron but my AC D17 Series 1 nf had to stay in NC – not enough flat room to turn it around it here in WV and this little things does all I need now – cheap, too!

I have all the truck & tandem trailer needed to transport the tractor to Fla but I was wondering about regulations and the Agricultural Check Point at the state line.

The truck, trailer & tractor are all private, not for hire. None of this equipment has been used in any type of money making operation (for sure!!!) and I have no plans to do anything other than private gardening in the future.

Do I need to stop at the commercial / Ag check points or weigh stations?

Thanks for any info!

You should call each states' highway patrol or department of roads to check and confirm. With my dads truck with Nebraska farm plates, I can go to Kansas if I need to with a trailer and get ag equipment. However, to go into Iowa with a trailer I would need a full DOT inspection AND DOT number on the truck regardless.

another thing i'll add from experience is before you go,wash the tractor and i mean wash it like your going to sell it, there is a big deal going now about transporting things like noxious weed seeds and other contaminates in the dirt stuck to machinery, some checkpoints will be checking for this

I guess I got lucky. I went down 2 weeks ago from sc and picked up two gp's. I didn't have and problems and didn't stop for any weigh stations.

Just my $.02. Last I knew, a private owned pickup with a trailer (NOT HAULING FOR HIRE OR HAVING NAME ON SIDE OR DOT #) and no one ton dually, can go anywhere and not scale or insp. My BIL hauls nursery stock in and out FL-GA all week long unmarked. Got busted- no log book, etc. His lawyer set him up legal after that. Got rid of Dually trucks, got shorter trailers. No more scaling! No more log book.

I must be doing something right. I have a Nebraska farm plated pickup. Been to Texas, South Dakota, Iowa, Colorado, and Wyoming, pulling a 30 ft flatbed. Never stopped at any of the scales, nor had to have any DOT numbers. I do have a CDL, and figure if the DOT want to run me down, I will deal with it then. Until then, its my personal daily driver, and I will drive it as such.

According to their law you only need to pull into the agr. inspection area in which they only want to know where you came from and where you are going and what you are hauling. It is not a weigh station or safety insp station or log book or other DOT reg station. Like they said , wash the tractor and they will probably send you on without even completing your stop. Great that you have done your homework though , as most other states don't have this and most don't know about it ahead of time.

I used to stop at weigh stations when I had a tractor on a trailer, but don't any more- last couple of times, they said if I was just hauling my own equipment, and fairly light, I didn't need to stop. In fact, it was fairly obvious that they didn't want me to waste their time.

Sounds good!!! Thanks for the info, guys!

I"ll be towing an 18 ft flatbed trailer with a 4x4 pickup truck so I should be able to ride through. Hopefully we"ll be making the run in a few weeks...as soon as the house sells, anyway! I got a line on some slightly used turf tires for it today so it"ll get a good bath and new shoes before the trip.

I was a turbine outage planner before I "got retarded"...goes with that job - I hate to leave the planning till the last minute! Thanks again!!!

I have been hauling my stuff with a 30 foot gooseneck for years. I have never been stopped and never been asked to stop. You are not a commercial rig, so why even worry about it.
