Its good to see you back to work, and assuming you stay busy with the demo business, thats a good thing.

There is a demo job nearby, people fought it tooth and nail, one city official even lost her job over the issue, this was a beautiful church that took years to build, and it was not in the disrepair they said it was, will be replaced by a larger new supermarket, they already have one, but the diocese shut a many churches down and sold them off, then its not long before this happens, we had some really amazing ones here, they are starting to disappear.
St Patricks shameful demo

Local Chatholic church was to be closed the parish had fund raisers gave the money to the Preist and they closed it anyway money is gone people were mad.

If there was enough money in it, the parish would not be closed. Really it is about how much folks will support a church. I know several ministers, and the economy has really taken a toll on churches.

They tried, it does take money to keep and utilize such a building, it just makes me sick to think that our government wastes so much money, yet a church, a symbol of all thats good and a place worship for all folks, one to marvel at and to just be in awe of everytime you open that door, has to be taken down, the money that is wasted, taxpayer money, a fraction of what they misuse could have keep this place going for years. I never thought in a million years they would take this church down, they just took down the most prolific building in that city and one that could be seen so prominently from across the river, people were all against it, fought the developer, the deeper pockets always win.

I seriously have to start avoiding the news, its just never any good, starting to spill over in my content here, don't want to hijack RB's thread, though there is a Kobelco in it LOL !

we have something in te contstiution that states church and state are seprate no tax payer money can be given the a church its the law

Billy where were the dollars going to come from to maintain a building of that size? May be a beautiful building but someone has to maintain it,how about an increase in your property tax to do it with.
Major to do in Ithaca because the school needed to tear down an abandoned coal oil plant. Plant was designed by some famous architect from Cornell,it was dangerous and also a brown field due to coal tar contamination. Historic preservation folks fought for a decade to stop the demolition. Popular support kind of melted away when the school district started listing it as a line item in the budget.
Funny how when people start seeing how something like this is hitting their pocketbook, they gain pragmatism real fast.

If there was a line item and the description was funding to maintain a building and there was a way it could be done without the conflict of interest which was stated below and true, I'd be all for it. (PS I actually missed your wording of "line item") but it came to mind just the same as you put it.

There is the side of this you mention, no doubt and that is exactly why its coming down. I have a background in heavy/commercial construction and know large buildings as much as the next guy, not all will stand the test of time and not all of those will because of disrepair, it does take funds.

An industrial building built for manufacturing, long obsolete, unless there is a re-use and its feasible, ok fine lets do it, but like so many of those sites, its impractical, not feasible and as is without site remediation its a hazard, it has to be made right and rightfully so for the community, yes I love old architecture too, but agree with you on that, some don't and they have a right not to, but in the long run, its for the best when an abandoned industrial site is cleaned up and made right for the next use of the site.

In this case, its a community thing, this particular building was in good condition, its a church and if people had to pay to keep it, its hard to say if it would have worked, or some other alternatives could have been implemented to supplement it, this is not an old industrial site, nor has it a famous architect that I know of. I disagree with the demolition of it regardless, because of what it is, a magnificent church, however a developer bought it fair and square to develop and profit from it, once they got the approvals, people fought it for a few years, they won, they can build on the site and those of the parish are shuttered out, thats that. Now they get a new supermarket and there are those that will be happy with that and those that do not, the latter is me. Some things like this always leave something to be desired and sometimes even with a massive effort, it just won't fly, shameful but true.

In the nearby city here, during urban renewal of the 60's, they tore down the train station, of the same architecture of Grand Central in Manhattan, they pilfered all the valuable architectural items and materials and pocket'd the money themselves, corrupt politicians, you used to be able to take a train from here, they saw fit for their own and their associates profit and the heck with the citizens.

We had an old large victorian house, would have taken a ton of money to re-use it, rehabilitate it etc., town condemned it we fought and beat them, but the contractor still had gotten it down, in a sense they did us a favor, cost was on the town for the legal mistakes they made, still shameful, but its a tall order to keep something like that, when you are busy and work hundreds of miles away. Was not a practical building, was a beautiful house, but like so many old barns, no practical use given the size and layout.

Some buildings are worth fighting for, some are not and not everyone agrees on that, LOL !

Right, just a comparison, really irony, waste over here, but starving over there, and there is legal delineation between the two, oil and water don't mix. I just find it shameful that some of the taxpayer money, and you are right, church and state, could not be put to much better use, even though legally this is not allowed, the billions and billions of dollars that none of us ever see 1/10th of a benefit from, what could be done, like keeping a church intact operating, for the community, well I've beat a dead horse to death on this one... guess its been on my mind, will have to check out the new store when it goes in, who needs a fancy church anyway when you think about it, must be human nature to want to fight practicality like we all do at times LOL !

Thats really what it is, the operating costs across the board on the diocese was too much, they had to make a decision, shut a bunch of them down, just an end of an era, does not sit right when you see what happens after they do this, people are suspicious of the hierarchy that make these decisions, and of the collection basket, so in reality, its an eventuality what is taking place now.

Hello, Back home from work now. Who's tearing down the Church? This was what it looked like when we left. Even had a vault.
