Working on my 1943 John Deere A getting it ready to run for the season. This tractor was stored for 20 some years before I got it a year ago so I"ve been going through it bit by bit.
I noticed there was the remains of a mud wasp nest in the air stack when I got it. Well upon servicing the air cleaner today I found out where the rest of the nest went. Along with all of the wasps lol. Real question being what oil do I use to replace whats in there? I was thinking it varied with the season but I can"t find any info on it.

Same as whats in the engine.

Cheapest no name motor oil you can find, You will not be wanting to use the tractor if it gets too cold for a 30 weight oil, just anything 10-30 or simular.

second that same weight as engine oil, which is probably 30wt. too thin and you will suck it into the engine, too thick and it will not wick up the inside properly to do its job.

We use 30WT oil in the oil cups on all our tractors.

An old work sock works good to keep daubers/wasps out of the air stack.

That sock doesn't look old to me! I don't see any holes. If you send it too me I'll send you four holy ones. LOL

Ordinary motor oil for the oil bath cleaners here although sometimes I will use some good clean looking used hy tran oil that I have drained from the newer tractors.

I have a couple of Fords in the 30-40 hp range. Run ATF and don't have a problem using up the oil in the sump meaning the engine is not sucking it up.

Most owners manuals will say to use the same oil
as you put in the crankcase. Wisconsin Air Cooled
Engine owners manuals, specifically state to
use "Crankcase oil" in oil bath air cleaners!
I use 10-30 in both places.
