3020 starter

Is there a wrench I can purchase to remove the back bolt on a 3020 starter so I can remove the starter from the tractor? If so, where can I find one and how much do they run? Can I use a half moon shaped wrench from Sears?

before i went to work for the jd dealer i use to borrow one from them but after i went to work for them the parts man who was retiring just gave me his. now i have no idea how much they are now. i almost bet they have one you could borrow

The wrench most JD dealers use is a JDE-81 Uh Oh I got it wrong it's JDE-80. Thanks for correcting my mistake.

With some patience one can bend a 9/16 combination wrench to work.

In most cases, that hidden bolt can be removed by using a 9/16" swivel socket for a 3/8" drive with a bunch of short extensions coupled together (using short ones gives more "flex) long enough to reach forward beyond the commutator endbell of the starter. Be SURE the battery is disconnected first to 'cause you don't want to short things out with all that metal passing behind the solenoid!

That should be JDE-80.

JDE-81 is a flywheel barring tool,

The JD part number is JDE-80 and they are $17.95 at the local dealership I go to. The price can be different as the special tools do not have a list price nation wide. It is up to each dealership as to what markup they want. I usually buy about one each year. I have 3 or 4 of them between the shop and service truck. It seems like guys want their own after they see me use one. So I sell them one of mine and replace it.

The long extension and swivel works if the bolt has not been over tightened. You are at such an angle that you can not get much torque on the swivel.

The key to the factory wrench is the offset as well as the bend.

You want to see something crazy??? Right now there is a JDE-80 wrench for sale on Ebay. There are 6 bids and it is at $67.79 plus shipping. LMAO you can buy 3 wrenches for what they are bidding on this one.

I checked my local JD dealers inventory. They have two on hand. The price was not on the computer but I looked up the bill where I bought one in Aug of 2012 and it was $17.95 then.

There are other wrenches that can be made to work but this one is not very high if you have any other JD tractors that you may need it on. If you just have the JD 3020 then maybe just try the swivel or make one by heating and bending a 9/16 wrench. Whether it works or not all depends on how tight the nut/bolt is.

In most cases I can remove that bolt using a short 3/8 drive 9/16 socket and a long extension.
Put the socket on the bolt head, then plug in the extension.

Remove the other two starter bolts first so you can back the starter out of the tractor housing as you unscrew that bolt.
When you put the starter back on, just reverse the procedure. Put the tough bolt in first with the starter backed out slightly. tighten that bolt just snug then install the other two bolts.

I know its pricey but the Snap-On works really well.It has a box end on each end with two different offsets. I like it better than the JD wrench. Sure you can borrow it but I need $100 deposit :)
