Speaking of old barns

There was a big one at the farm auction I attended today. Looks like it has had some supports put up along the walls to keep it straight. Huge air vents on the roof seemed to be the style here as I have seen others like it.

I know it needs some work alright or it is going down. But the farm is sold. I don't think the new owners even live there so I think the barn and buildings will either gradually settle into the ground or else be cleared away and the ground farmed right over. Sad but thats progress.

Thats a Sears barn. I have the 1919 barn catalog and it is in there right down to the roof vents. Those were the top of the line vents called majestic ventilators. Not sure of the size of that one, but if it is a 92 foot it was $3282 delivered to the nearest depot. That included all nails, hinges, doors prebuilt, paint, and vents. Lumber was precut and numbered.

Very interesting. I know the T.Eaton company sold a lot of houses around this area a hundred years ago but not sure about barns. I have an old catalogue of houses and barns from about 1920, can't recall the name of the company but they had a lot of nice barns and houses for sale. Here is one page showing the Wheatland barn.
