PTO Shaft.

In order to disconnect the PTO shaft from the tractor on my flail mower I need to disconnect one side of the mower , or disassemble the slip clutch. The problem is the inner shaft is just a couple inches too long, and can't slide the tube back far enough. It makes a little hard to hook up the mower, especially by your self.I was going to cut the inner shaft, but got to thinking. maybe it is good if the PTO can't be disconnected. It will keep the shaft in place if the lock pin comes out. I emagine that will make quite a noise if that happened, and sure bend up things. Anyone had the PTO shafe pull out of the tractor, and fly around breaking things? Stan

They are made to be cut to length. You can always put a nut and bolt in as a safety.

Too long of PTO shaft can cause major damage if it goes all the way together and there isn't enough room. If you had a manual for your flail mower it would explain how to cut the PTO shaft to the right length for your tractor. If the lock pin isn't secure, get a new yoke with a lock pin that is.

pto shaft on my winch was too long once, had to cut couple inches off each piece. Had things bound up & thought I'd never get everything loose. Lost a whole afternoon fighting it.

Its not a big deal to cut the shaft. Run a bolt as a precautionary measure in the tractor connection if your worried about a disconnect. You could damage something running it too long.

Agree on it being too long leading to problems in hilly terrain. On cutting you may have to cut both halves. Depends upon how it's made. I had to do one on my broadcast spreader....the red conical ones that hold about 500#. I have had a mower come loose and the shaft separated. What I didn't realize was that the shaft had mass and we have gravity! The shaft came out, hit the ground and kept turning without even as much as a bounce. No big deal.

I'd cut a half inch off of each end, male, and female. You also might get it to disconnect easier, by disconnecting the toplink, and raising the lift arms. mower will rotate on the pins, and loosen the shaft.

This was on a pull type combine and total one piece shaft was about 2 feet long to universal at bearing support on front of toung, it telescoped behind that bearing support that moved forward and back all the time in use. well the bolt in the end of the shaft that held the universal on came out and universal pulled off shaft. Quite a banging till it stoped, found a new bolt and washers and put it back and ysed for years. Tractor was a 38 A John Deere and combine was a A C 60

I never disconnect the pto from the tractor till I pull forward, a little. Then pull the two halves apart. Ever since we went to those European shafts, they will stick and are hard to get sliding again, if left outside in the weather.

When you cut the shaft, if there's a round shield around the shaft cut the shield just a tad shorter than the shaft so it's easier to mate it up when you slide it back together. Jim
