Our '39 9N didn't have footboards either. Dad put me on that to pull the binder when I was 8 years old. I went barefoot all summer in those years, but had to put on shoes as my feet got too hot from the transmission.
I spent a lot of hours on that 9N with a mounted cutlivator digging up Quack Grass roots to kill the grass. I had to dig it at least once a week to bring up the roots top dry, as there were no chemicals to kill plants in those days.
