Broom Sage?

I have about an acre area of Broom Sage starting in one of my fields. What is the best way to get rid of it and not kill the rest of my hay?

KSU says that broom sage is a result of inadequate phosphorous. A soil test would be beneficial, I don't think that fertilizing differently or liming will kill the existing grass though but it may stop it from spreading.

I limed my broomsedge & it didn't help a thing tho I had a soil test & lime spread to specs. Only change it made was to kill the broomsedge where the truck tires ran. 2 years later you could still see the daul wheel tracks of everywhere the truck had been. All my regular truck paths thru the meadow are green & free of sedge. Cost $1200 to find that out.

Interesting information. Thanks even though it wasn't for me. I don't have any (my ph is around 6.4) but neighbors have it thick and as you said, they haven't even mowed their pasture in 30 years, much less fertilize.

in nw alabama, if your neighbor has sedge then you have sedge. it will thrive in hay fields, fence rows, tree lines, pond banks and your yard. about the only thing i noticed that eliminates it is cattle grazing it or chemicals.

i might add, in the spring when the sedge starts to green up the cattle will eat it vigorously. once aged they will avoid it. it is baled as hay when it is in a mixed field, evidently goats eat it and cattle as a last resort.
