Two year old loses feet in lawn mower accident

wow that's awful, but I from what I hear, it happens more often than you'd think.

I always wondered how on earth anybody could screw up enough to cause an injury with a lawn mower - until I almost lost my left foot to a lawn tractor.

Going around a steep uphill corner - wet grass - started sliding backwards as my wife was pulling the car into the driveway behind me - just instinctively (panicked) put my foot down onto the ground to stop the slide (small tractor, long legs)

- obviously that didn't work - kept sliding - mower deck pinned my foot down with my foot right under the spinning blades. Blades had to have been just millimeters over my boot.

Hit the kill switch real quick, but had that blade been just a fraction of an inch lower, "real quick" wouldn't have made a whole lot of difference.

I remember when our children were young. Twice I was mowing grass with the rider and our son and daughter came running to me to tell me something. I chewed them out very harshly. So harsh my daughter cried.

They understand now. I guess what they had to tell me at the time was very important to them.

They had no fear of what could happen.

I can't imagine how this father feels for what's happened to his daughter. I hope some day he'll be able to forgive himself or not blame himself.

That happened to one of my co-worker's son. He lost some toes and it kept him out of the Veit Nam war. He must have 9 lives since he was a carpenter he fell from the second floor to the basement in a house they were building. He wasn't seriously hurt. Hal

To my surprise it is documented that the
most lawn mower injuries are from
backing up; thus the reason for the pto
shutoff relay when the unit is placed in
reverse.

That mower has a safety switch to kill the engine if the blades are engauged when it is put in reverse. Another case of someone bypassing the safety switch likely.

I always wondered why the pto on my cub cadet shut off when putting it in reverse I often mow in reverse around trees an such and when snow blowing the first few times it drove me nuts shutting off every time I backed up. as you can guesse it doesn't do it anymore.

I read the first paragraph, and could go no further. Little kids...

When I was little, we used to take turns swinging out from the hay loft on a rope, and back in. Our farm, their farm, everyone's farm, we all did it together. I wasn't there that day, but my friends were one farm over doing what we all did countless times. Jenny lost her grip and was impaled on one of the T-posts on either side of the closed barn doors to tie them open and died right there. Gosh dang, if our parents had known what we were up to. Kids are so innocent.

when my first daughter was about 9 months old her grandpa decided to have her sit on the mower with him while he mowed, i pulled up into the yard and threw a sheeet fit,

i calmy asked him "do your ears ring for a while after you mow?"

his said "yes"
so i asked" do you think it's a good idea for her little 9 month old ones to be exposed to the same noise" and then i just walked off, he got the idea.

my wife wasn't happy with me, until i asked her how she was going to explain to her friends how our daughter lost her feet or leg when she fell off the mower,

Just a terrible accident. Have a friend who as a
teenager lost a brother when bushhoging. He fell
off the tractor and was run over by the bushhog. My
friend has never been the same.

If you are on a riding mower and someone starts waving at you, don't back up, don't turn right or left, STOP THE DARNED THING RIGHT THERE! Shut it off and find out what they want!

(quoted from post at 23:34:02 04/11/13) need to outlaw riding mowers.

Has to be bought from a licensed dealer, have a background check, proof of passing a safety course, $1M lawn mower liability insurance, a limit on the size of the gas tank and safety interlock with fingerprint ID requirement on the starter and the mower has to be kept in a locked shed when not being used.

Except that kids have this penchant for rushing right up to the mower from BEHIND. You can't see them coming. You can't hear them coming.

If they stood at the edge of the lawn and waved at you, it would be one thing, but they gotta come running right up to you, and they're on top of you before you know it.

Hopefully they get the message the first time, but some kids just plain don't no matter what you do.
