i have a jd 1830- there is a problem with the steering: when turning to the right i have power assist, but when turning to the left it has no power assist and I have to use the rear wheel brake to turn. the deere dealer wants me to bring it in for diagnosis at $90 per hour. I would like to know if anybody knows what the problem is? thank you for reading.

Sounds like a spool in the unit. I had to take the one off my 1020 in and get it fixed one time.
I think there are two spools in there, one to turn left, one to turn right.

Just don't let them do to you what they did to me. I took it in TOLD them what was wrong. When I paid the bill and brought it home,it still did the same thing. The service manager had me playing phone tag all afternoon with his "try this-try that". Just before closing,he let me talk to the guy who worked on it. I asked him what he did,he said the only thing he did was replaced the seals. Had to take it off, take it back,80 mile round trip, then go get it again. They didn't credit me anything for the half azzed job they did the first time.

Good luck. Make sure they replaced the spool BEFORE you pay the bill and take it home.

Does steering housing get hot? More than likely rrlund is correct in that one of the steering spools(parts keys #19 or #20) has failed or possibly requires shimming. If you are mechanically inclined you can repair this valve yourself with the aid of a JD service manual that can be purchased on CD for around $40. It's been too long and I can't remember which spool controls LH turn which is where the service manual comes into play. The spools & seal kit can be replaced without removing the housing from the tractor. The 6 big O-RINGS(parts key #18)) are a pain in the rear to get back into their correct grooves but can be accomplished with patience.

This happened with ours years ago.The steering housing got hot and I think it would leak a little if it got hot enough.Had to have the seals and O rings replaced several times. It only got fixed properly after it went to a Deere dealer even though the guy that played around with it was a competent mechanic.
