Starter flywheel assembly on Farmall H tractor 1940

I'm having engine lock up on & off. I took off the starter and it looks OK. The gear teeth look rounded OK but the gear teeth on the flywheel look sharp on the front side that mate up with the starter and rounded on the backside. Is it possible the flywheel is assembled wrong? If so can I ground a small round edge on flywheel teeth to help the starter mate up with the flywheel better?

If you mean the same thing I had on my 1950 "H", the starter locking in place before it could spin the engine, I fixed mine by going to 12 volts. Mine used to just go "Cha-chunk!" from time to time, and lock the starter in place. Had to remove starter, jiggle it, and re-install to fix it. Switched from 6 volts over to 12 volts, and she really starts now. Never a problem.

The ring gear on the old Farmalls gets messed up after a while and will cause the starter to hang up on it. The ring gear can be replaced. I"ve never done one but I have 3 tractors that need one.

As the problem gets worse it will hang up a 12V system too. I have 3 tractors converted to 12 volts and 2 of them will hang up once or twice per year.

The solution is a new style starter pinion. it has no big spring, it also has a cushion in the drive gear that buffers the impact. This solves the lockup issue on all but the worst ring gears. (and it is cheap) Jim

12 volt conversions do not fix starter jamming. in fact is harder on ring gear. burrs can be removed from ring gear with file or die grinder as a cheap fix.

I would suggest that the ring gear has been reversed at some previous date in an attempt to correct the similar problem. Yes, you might be able to bevel the front edges of the ring gear and might correct the problem.

A new ring gear and drive is what you really need to fix it right. I have beveled the worn teeth on the ring gear with a pointed carbide on a die grinder working through the starter hole. It worked good and never misses anymore.

I remember the drive coming in from the back of the ring gear on the H.I replaced a lot of drives on farmalls in the 50s but memory is foggy now.You should be able to tell by the gear position.
