Found the first mistake of this planting season!!!

We got in the fields today. Spreading some lime and fertilizer. The ground is too wet for any tillage plus the north sides of the hills still have frost in the ground.

My youngest and I where sorting seed corn to the farms we will use them on. We came up way short. I went over the figures and could not see where we where off.

We added the farm that was farmed by the BTO. This is the one that we used to farm for almost forty years until four years ago the owner had a bid auction for the land rent. She got a higher rent per acre but the BTO kept shrinking the acres. Plus she got all the water ways farmed across and the gate/fences destroyed. She came to me just before Thanksgiving with her daughter. The farm goes to the daughter if anything happens to the current owner(mother). They wanted a long term rental agreement with me. We came to an agreement. I will repair all the gates, fences, and re-seed all the erosion control strips. ( HAAAA Water ways). We get a favorable rent for the next 10 years, right of first refusal after that. The rent is based on the price of corn and yields. We both are happy.

Now the mistake. I do not need the extra crop land. I do want the pasture and hay ground. So my youngest son is going to plant the crop land(We signed the lease together). He thought I counted it when I ordered my seed. I thought he had ordered it with his. So neither of us covered the seed order. LOL

Lucked out when we checked with the seed salesman. He had a fellow quit farming (rented out his farm) and wanted to return his early seed order. The seed he returned where varieties that will work for us. So we lucked out.

So we got the first mistake of the planting season out of the way!!!! I hope that it is the only one.

Well I am glad someone else con make mistakes, so far we have only plowed the wrong field, but the seed is right, I think.

The worst I have done lately happen a few years a go. We where using a weed control spray that had to be Incorporated into the ground. I started out and sprayed the wrong strips. So I messed up my crop rotation. I did catch it before we planted.

Almost sprayed some Liberty corn with Lightening one year too. Caught myself just as I was starting to mix the chemicals.

Neighbor had a hundred acres of knee high corn sprayed with the wrong chemical a few years ago that way. Killed every stalk in late June. Had to replant it to corn.
