A couple of dealers are starting a color war in my area. This area has been a John Deere area because of the large dealer support. It is all one dealer but he has many locations. Most of the big players use Deere.
Most of the other dealers have closed down.
To try and stay in business the local Case/IH dealer added Kubota to his line and targeted yuppie's. I do not think he has one new case tractor on his lot but has many Kubota's.

The display for the Kubota dealer on a lot he owns on the side of the interstate.

Then you drive 1/4 mile down the road and see a billboard for the John Deere dealer

There are sales minimums to keep inorder to keep the franchise. Around here, an MF dealer didn't have the big ticket sales the corperate number crunchers wanted, so he lost Agco/MF- after +50 years, and now sells aftermarket spares and...Yanmars.
All of New England has always been 30-60HP country, you can't sell brand new 150-200 horses around here! You can't turn one around in a field as small as ours!
The boardmembers look at spread sheets, but not maps. So must be the same in your area, JD guy got the market share, maybe the other brands can't keep their old franchises either.

Here in the UK a lot of the CaseIH dealers also sell Kubota. Over the last few years JD have sacked a lot of dealers both large and small. Most of the sacked dealers have taken other tractors and they have kept their customers. MJ

A colour (spelt with a 'U' LOL!) war is nothing new....back in 1965 Massey Ferguson rented a large field near to the motorway(interstate to y'all) and set about putting up signs advertising the RED GIANTS (100 series) The day of their ploughing demonstration a truck load of Ford 6X range tractors (pre force) pulled up on the motorway reservation with a huge sign .....'The GIANT KILLERS" though we all know this plan backfired as the blue tractors killed no giants and had to be disciontinued 3 years later when Ford unveiled the Force range.

Not a Case/IH Tractor dealer been a Kubota Dealer for 30 years and the Largest farmer in Tangipahoa Parish is all Orange. There has not been a John Deere dealer in this area for many years.

Kubota is creeping up quickly on the sleeping giant. I bought a 75 HP Kubota with cab, loader, and 4wd. Cheaper than Deere and I think the Kubota is the better tractor if the price was the same. Was not impressed with the comparable model from Deere. Kubota has three dealers in my area and Deere has one. I think the dealer network will prevail.

Same thing around me. Drive out in the countryside and the green color is changing to orange. At least my Kubota will move fwd/backward,raise/lower 3 pt & loader without the need for electricity

Not a Case/IH Tractor dealer
Star was a Case dealer long before Kubota even came to the U.S. They still are but you may not know that since they do not stock any Case tractors.

Largest farmer in Tangipahoa Parish
Those words do not even go together. What we talking a 4 acre strawberry farm.
All the LARGE row crop farms around here grow sugar and are located in the river parishes and 95% of them use John Deere.

There has not been a John Deere dealer in this area for many years
Sunshine (the Deere dealership) has 6 locations. 5 are within 50 miles of Hammond.
Considering Star is the only dealer left in Tangipahoa Parish of any brand I would say his only local competition is Sunshine (JD) or Evergreen (Kubota) both in Covington.

John,

I think you need to get facts straight. I know this Kubota dealer you are talking about. They did not just become a Kubota dealer. They have been Kubota in that location since they opened in the early 90s and the owner has been selling Kubotas since the early 80s. I don't appreciate you calling people that buy Kubotas "yuppies", as I own one. Kubotas are being used by many farmers and hard working people to make a living and holding up well to the challenge. John Deere is scared by their competition. As for the area, there has not been a John Deere dealer there in years, so I don't know what you mean it is a John Deere area. As I drive the roads, I see more Orange tractors than Green.

I like the signs and the competition but don't see a reason to bash a dealer when you don't know the facts. The family that owns the Kubota dealership does a lot for the community and continues to give back. What does the John Deere dealer do?

I know for a fact they are not a CaseIH dealer maybe that's why they do not have a Case tractor on the yard, they however are a CaseIH parts dealer. There Strawberry farmer has over 500 acres not 5, we are not talking about the River parishes we are talking about Tangipahoa where Star Equipment is located.

The IH dealers here in Illinois have been selling Kubota for years.

I don't like the thought of Our US dealers selling foreign made equipment but for the last 30 years any IH tractor 80hp or less was made in Britain. The serial number on these Britain made tractor will have a "B" in front of the serial number...

The long time MF dealer in NH built a big new building next to the interstate about 6 years ago. then three years later he lost the dealership because another one was selling a lot of compacts out of about ten locations but with service at only two of them. Last year they pulled it from him because his sale dropped off and gave it to a guy who had been selling Kaufman trailers and Toro equipment for fifteen years.
