So, I thought the economy was in the tank and folks werent buying high priced fuel WRONG.

Having driven through and/or around (several routes thru or around town and by passes etc etc)Atlanta nearly 40 yrs on way to Florida and return Ive seen traffic butttttttttttttttttt yesterday took the cake. IT TOOK US NEARLY 4 HOURS TO GET FROM NORTH OF MACON TO MARIETTA GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR And there were no wrecks,,,,,,,,no lane closures,,,,,no stops or cops JUST 6/8 LANES OF TRAFFIC You oughta seen the back up where I 285 met I 75 milessssssssssssssss of stop n go

There were signs posted DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH DOWNTOWN (take by pass) activities and longggggggggg delays etc.

Of course I know the best times and when to go through town and when to take the by pass etc etc buttttttttt yesterday was an exception to all the rules

It will be good to get back home again in Indiana, hopefully this evening

Thank you and have a nice day

Hi John...

Atlanta traffic annually rates badly in almost every survey of traffic in the country. Usually in the top 20 for any category that we'd consider annoying. You've been dealing with it long enough to have experienced normal issues.

Add into that ... NCAA final four basketball is in town plus opening week for baseball. And half the metro county schools are wrapping up spring break... and the other half are letting out for spring break. And I'm sure I've missed hearing about something...

Glad you guys made it home safely. Sorry to hear it took the better part of a day to get through Georgia.

Randy

JohnT,
Know what you are talking about. I found it"s best going through Alanta at midnight. In an RV, aren"t you to take the by-pass like the 18 wheelers? About 3 years ago, there was a bad winter storm a day before Christmas. I helped Cousin Eddie, drive his 40 ft RV to Florida. I took the by-pass on the west side. Wasn"t muck traffic then, just snow and a cross wind.
Have Fun.

Atlanta traffic is bad at almost anytime. In all the time I've driven through there, there has only been a couple of times I didn't get hung up in traffic.

"Back Home In Indiana"

Seems like I remember a real neat instrumental by that name, and I bet you can play it on that banjo.

Last time I drove thru Atlanta I think I coulda rode a bicycle thru and made better time. I guess I should be careful about using the words "bicycle" and "Atlanta" in the same sentence - folks will think I'm suicidal.

I have worked in a lot of the major cities over the last 20 years. Cities I avoid if possible due to traffic... Atlanta, Toronto, Boston, Chicago and Cincinnati. Especially pulling a trailer or RV.

I love my house in the middle of no where on a nice two lane road.

To add to the normal mess there, they have the final four going on this weekend. The last time I went through was 3 am, I cruised right through.

I have driven through Atlanta at various times of the day, even hit Atlanta at five o'clock rush hour, managed to get through in about 45 minutes using the HOV lanes..BUT..we hit Atlanta coming home from Florida at rush hour on a Friday night and had the same experience you did, every ramp was full every overpass was full, the bi Pass was clogged and we were about three hours ,just like you. We now plan our trips to hit Atlanta early Saturday morning,or Sunday morning when you could shoot a canon down I-75 and not hit anything, after that weekdays about mid morning,or very late at night..Atlanta is worse than Toronto and I have got caught in rush hour and rain in Cincinnati that took just as long to get through, close to three hours. Yes you would wonder where all the vehicles came from, take all that time and then you're rolling along at 70 wondering where they all went!

Jon T,

I lived in and around Atlanta, off and on again, for 20 years. I knew all of the side streets and shortcuts, and I never did find a GOOD way to get through the traffic. The people drive like maniacs and there simply is too much traffic for the highways.

I avoid Atlanta like the plague now.

Crazy traffic always,I-285 around Atlanta has been nicknamed the watermelon 500 for good reasons, always a fun drive.

Seems to get worse there every year. I have driven the route you mentioned too many times to count. A while back there was a proposal to make I 75 through downtown double deck, one northbound, the other southbound. The trouble is, who is going to pay for it.

Texas A&M transportation institute rated Atlanta 7th worst. Boston and Southern NH where I live is ranked fourth worst. I go down there once or twice a week but many here go in every day.

Imagine what it was like when those college kids decided to get line up 3-4 deep in every lane and do the speed limit. They had traffic at a standstill in Chattanooga!

Best time I ever made getting out of Atlanta was two days before Christmas, 80,100 pound gross, loaded with peanuts, rolled right through, then got on 75 and doing 50 with the high dollar lane clear. Got out there with another guy and we didn't back it down til we hit the curve in Chattanooga.

Things would work better if they didn't keep the trucks pinned over in the two lanes next to the ramps. And if you really want to reduce congestion, separate all through traffic from the local traffic. Not like Chicago, where they open 3 lanes into 8, and let cars fly ahead, and jam things up even worse when the 8 lanes drop back down to 4.
