I have several pictures of me on dad's 8N - they look a lot like that. I remember how big that little tractor seemed to me. He will remember that for a long time.

i learned to drive on a Ford 3000, dad used to let
me drive (in bull low) while he threw feed of the
carry-all on the back... i remember it like it was
yesterday... i was about 9 or 10...

We have to preserve these old N series tractors, if for nothing else time like this! That may be and interesting thread to see how many of us cut our teeth on a N series tractor...

WHAT? That is so unsafe! He will never forget these good times, and since we learn quicker when we are younger this is the perfect time to teach him. I cannot express how much ahead in life he will be by learning this stuff and having the knowledge and confidence that you cannot get by playing video games and watching TV. Good job for you. They gotta learn sometime.

Good for him. Good for you. Have any daughters? They sometimes have to do chores like milking cows, operating tractors too as they get older. Just a thought. One of my sisters can operate a tractor and hand you the right wrench when you ask for it. My other two sisters don't know what a wrench is, which would be OK, but their husbands don't either. No wonder their kids are screwed up. Don't let that happen to yours, and it looks like you aren't. Good for you.

I started driving the 9N pulling the binder for Dad when I was 8; been driving ever since.

Hi all, just visiting this forum in response to Roy's 'spitroaster'.
The attached photo was taken in 1961 when I was about 6 on our 1948 TEA 20 petrol with TVO conversion in South Wales. I could just push the pedals down by standing on the footplates.
It was a wonderful way to learn to drive.
Just wondering if it could be researched how many kids, yes, girls as well who had the fortune to learn at that age on a farm have turned out to be bad drivers. I bet there's not many.
My partner learned on her father's TEA20 as well and I have 110% confidence in her driving.

Glad to see you starting him out early in life, I started driving Dads 9n at 8yrs,then he got 3000 Ford that was a big step up power steering and brakes that worked!! still have both tractors.

Don't know how old I was when I learned to drive. Had to help dad feed cows with the 46 International pickup. Dad would put it in granny low and get out and I would slid under the steering wheel and drive.

Great picture. I'll bet he was really proud afterward.
I was somewhat of a slow starter I was 12 when Dad tought me how to drive a 8N. Told me to let the clutch out so I did good thing it was in low gear but it was a nice 1 ft wheely. After he got done laughing he said let the clutch out slowly.

The grin on his face is absolutely priceless! Glad you got a picture of it. I was small kid. Grandpa FINALLY let me drive the Farmall H at age 10. I think it was first gear with the engine near idle. I first drove his Ford F100 pickup at age 11 when we were taking trash back to the woods. First flying lesson age 15. First jet ride in a T37 at ROTC summer camp at age 20. First supersonic ride in the T38 (that really hooked me) at age 22. You don't forget these moments!!

This was my grandfather's 1949 8N. He used it for many years to mow with. It was pretty much wore out. I got it about 25 years ago and slowly rebuilt it and then repainted it. I have used it quite a bit for landscaping and yard work duties over the years. Neat old tractor.

I learned to drive at an early age on a Farmall B. Does it make me a better driver today? Oh, I suppose. When I got a good load on the pickup, I tend to mash either end of the brake pedal instead of turning the wheel, and I adjust my road speed by shifting gears. But other than that, I think I'm a decent driver.
