Cross loader valve

The valve on our loader is a Cross brand, and this winter it started no holding the bucket down when Dad was scraping the driveway- Would it just be some orings, or what would be needed to fix it?

It still holds the bucket rolld back, so it's gotta be the control in my mind. Blown o ring on the spool? How do I take it apart, just remove the aluminum pc. that holds the lever?

Is it a joystick setup? If it is, it could be a
cable stretching... that can cause some weird
things. The valves generally don't have o-rings,
just machined ports and spools that fit to very
tight tolerances... It could be a piece of cr*p
somewhere in the system causing some issues.

Nope, just 2 levers. Do they just pull out when that aluminum pc that the lever mounts to is removed?

I highly doubt that your valve is bad.

You can reverse the hoses on the cylinder and see if it still acts up the same or in the opposite direction. If it acts up in the opposite direction after the hoses are switched it is your valve if not it's the cylinder.

I have a Cross double valve on my AC WD reversed loader.....circa late 70s. Bucket curls down by itself. I "heard" that they don"t have seals/o-rings....and just need to be replaced when they go bad, cuz of internal wear. ok- that might just be gossip....so, IDK! Not gonna fix it, offered it to a son who could use it, said I have another triple valve in mind so he can put a grapple on the bucket. (problem solved!).

I would bet that one of the cylinder is bad not the valve. There is no fixing a Cross valve that is leaking internally. They are steel spools in an cast housing. They are a lapped fit, no orings.

Hi Donavan, been involved with loaders and telescopic handlers for over 30 years. I think the problem could be leaking ram seals or a piston come loose on its rod inside the ram. If that is the fault the ram will hold pressure one way only. MJ

Depending how the valve is plumbed, even a blown piston seal
will let a double acting cylinder stay extended as the pressure
will still act on the rod area alone as it leaks around the piston.

The side effect of this is after you pick up a big load, the leakage
will let the pressure go very high while holding the load and you
will blow hoses as the relief valve is isolated when holding.

Scored spool will just let the oil escape. My Kubota's curl spool
has been leaky from new, common problem on the cheap husco
valve. Simply poor tolerances.

The area around a large hydraulic leak should heat up quickly, especially inside a small valve body.
